When importing a private elliptic curve key, require the input to have
exactly the right size. RFC 5915 requires the right size (you aren't
allow to omit leading zeros). A different buffer size likely means
that something is wrong, e.g. a mismatch between the declared key type
and the actual data.
In psa_import_key, change the order of parameters to pass
the pointer where the newly created handle will be stored last.
This is consistent with most other library functions that put inputs
before outputs.
In psa_generate_derived_key, change the order of parameters to pass
the pointer where the newly created handle will be stored last.
This is consistent with most other library functions that put inputs
before outputs.
psa_set_key_lifetime and psa_set_key_id aren't pure setters: they also
set the other attribute in some conditions. Add dedicated tests for
this behavior.
Make `mbedtls_x509_subject_alternative_name` to be a single item
rather than a list. Adapt the subject alternative name parsing function,
to receive a signle `mbedtls_x509_buf` item from the subject_alt_names
sequence of the certificate.
In x509_info_subject_alt_name() we silently dropped names that we
couldn't parse because they are not supported or are malformed. (Being
malformed might mean damaged file, but can be a sign of incompatibility
between applications.)
This commit adds code notifying the user that there is something, but
we can't parse it.
Only allow creating keys in the application (user) range. Allow
opening keys in the implementation (vendor) range as well.
Compared with what the implementation allowed, which was undocumented:
0 is now allowed; values from 0x40000000 to 0xfffeffff are now
forbidden.
Change the scope of key identifiers to be global, rather than
per lifetime. As a result, you now need to specify the lifetime of a
key only when creating it.
Record what key ids have been used in a test case and purge them. The
cleanup code no longer requires the key identifiers used in the tests
to be in a certain small range.
Declare algorithms for ChaCha20 and ChaCha20-Poly1305, and a
corresponding (common) key type.
Don't declare Poly1305 as a separate algorithm because it's a one-time
authenticator, not a MAC, so the API isn't suitable for it (no way to
use a nonce).
Split the test function copy_key into two: one for success and one for
failure.
Add failure tests where the attributes specify an incorrect type or size.
If we provide low order element as a public key and the implementation
maps the point in infinity to the origin, we can force the common secret
to be zero.
According to the standard (RFC 7748) this is allowed but in this case
the primitive must not be used in a protocol that requires contributory
behaviour.
Mbed Crypto returns an error when the result is the point in the
infinity and does not map it to the origin. This is safe even if used in
protocols that require contributory behaviour.
This commit adds test cases that verify that Mbed Crypto returns an
error when low order public keys are processed.
The low order elements in the test cases were taken from this website:
https://cr.yp.to/ecdh.html
The tests we had for ECP point multiplication were tailored for test
vectors symulating crypto operations and tested a series of operations
against public test vectors.
This commit adds a test function that exercises a single multiplication.
This is much better suited for negative testing than the preexisting
test.
Only one new test case is added that exercises a fraction of an existing
test, just to make sure that the test is consistent with the existing
test functions.
Read extra data from the domain parameters in the attribute structure
instead of taking an argument on the function call.
Implement this for RSA key generation, where the public exponent can
be set as a domain parameter.
Add tests that generate RSA keys with various public exponents.
After calling psa_get_key_attributes(), call
psa_reset_key_attributes() if the key may have domain parameters,
because that's the way to free the domain parameter substructure in
the attribute structure. Keep not calling reset() in some places where
the key can only be a symmetric key which doesn't have domain
parameters.
Instead of passing a separate parameter for the key size to
psa_generate_key and psa_generator_import_key, set it through the
attributes, like the key type and other metadata.
This commit adds tests to check the behavior of the record encryption
routine `ssl_encrypt_buf` when the buffer surrounding the plaintext is
too small to hold the expansion in the beginning and end (due to IV's,
padding, and MAC).
Each test starts successively increases the space available at the
beginning, end, or both, of the record buffer, and checks that the
record encryption either fails with a BUFFER_TOO_SMALL error, or
that it succeeds. Moreover, if it succeeds, it is checked that
decryption succeeds, too, and results in the original record.
This commit adds tests exercising mutually inverse pairs of
record encryption and decryption transformations for the various
transformation types allowed in TLS: Stream, CBC, and AEAD.
Update persistent_key_load_key_from_storage to the new attribute-based
key creation interface. I tweaked the code a little to make it simpler
and more robust without changing the core logic.
With the attribute-based key creation API, it is no longer possible to
have a handle to a slot that does not hold key material. Remove all
corresponding tests.
Implement attribute querying.
Test attribute getters and setters. Use psa_get_key_attributes instead
of the deprecated functions psa_get_key_policy or
psa_get_key_information in most tests.
Implement the new, attribute-based psa_import_key and some basic
functions to access psa_key_attributes_t. Replace
psa_import_key_to_handle by psa_import_key in a few test functions.
This commit does not handle persistence attributes yet.
This commit starts a migration to a new interface for key creation.
Today, the application allocates a handle, then fills its metadata,
and finally injects key material. The new interface fills metadata
into a temporary structure, and a handle is allocated at the same time
it gets filled with both metadata and key material.
This commit was obtained by moving the declaration of the old-style
functions to crypto_extra.h and renaming them with the to_handle
suffix, adding declarations for the new-style functions in crypto.h
under their new name, and running
perl -i -pe 's/\bpsa_(import|copy|generator_import|generate)_key\b/$&_to_handle/g' library/*.c tests/suites/*.function programs/psa/*.c
perl -i -pe 's/\bpsa_get_key_lifetime\b/$&_from_handle/g' library/*.c tests/suites/*.function programs/psa/*.c
Many functions that are specific to the old interface, and which will
not remain under the same name with the new interface, are still in
crypto.h for now.
All functional tests should still pass. The documentation may have
some broken links.
Since the format change for EC public key import from
SubjectPublicKeyInfo to the ECPoint content, it is no longer possible
to import a key with metadata marking it as ECDH-only. This test was
converted systematically but now no longer has any purpose since the
public key is now like any other public key.
Allow either the key derivation step or the key agreement step to
fail.
These tests should be split into three groups: key derivation setup
tests with an algorithm that includes a key agreement step, and
multipart key agreement failure tests, and raw key agreement failure
tests.

The documentation doesn't explicitly say whether it's allowed or not.
This currently works with the default software implementation, but
only by accident. It isn't guaranteed to work with new ciphers or with
alternative implementations of individual ciphers, and it doesn't work
with the PSA wrappers. So don't do it.
Merge the Mbed Crypto development branch a little after
mbedcrypto-1.0.0 into the PSA Crypto API 1.0 beta branch a little
after beta 2.
Summary of merge conflicts:
* Some features (psa_copy_key, public key format without
SubjectPublicKeyInfo wrapping) went into both sides, but with a few
improvements on the implementation side. For those, take the
implementation side.
* The key derivation API changed considerably on the API side. This
merge commit generally goes with the updated API except in the tests
where it keeps some aspects of the implementation.
Due to the divergence between the two branches on key derivation and
key agreement, test_suite_psa_crypto does not compile. This will be
resolved in subsequent commits.

It was failing to set the key in the ENCRYPT direction before encrypting.
This just happened to work for GCM and CCM.
After re-encrypting, compare the length to the expected ciphertext
length not the plaintext length. Again this just happens to work for
GCM and CCM since they do not perform any kind of padding.

MBEDTLS_PSA_HAS_ITS_IO is not really useful since it doesn't actually
enable anything except the entropy seed file support, which only
requires the ITS interface and not a native implemetation. Remove it.
Since there is now a single storage backend, we don't need a backend
interface. Make the functions that were declared in
psa_crypto_storage_backend.h and are now both defined and used in
psa_crypto_storage.c static, except for psa_is_key_present_in_storage
which is used by the gray-box tests and is now declared in
psa_crypto_storage.h.
Now that we have ITS over files, we no longer need a direct backend
for key storage over files. Remove psa_crypto_storage_file and its
tests.
Switch MBEDTLS_PSA_CRYPTO_STORAGE_ITS_C and MBEDTLS_PSA_ITS_FILE_C on
by default. This preserves functionality and test coverage in the
default configuration, but forgets any key previously stored using the
file backend.

The ecp_get_type function comes handy in higher level modules and tests
as well. It is not inline anymore, to enable alternative implementations
to implement it for themselves.
mbedtls_ecp_read_key() module returned without an error even when
importing keys corresponding to the requested group was not
implemented.
We change this and return an error when the requested group is not
supported and make the remaining import/export functions more robust.
Commit "Smoke-test operation contexts after setup+abort" replaced
{failed-setup; abort} sequences by {failed-setup; successful-setup}.
We want to test that, but we also want to test {failed-setup; abort}.
So test {failed-setup; abort; failed-setup; successful-setup}.
After a successful setup followed by abort, or after a failed setup
from an inactive state, a context must be usable. Test this for
hash, MAC and cipher contexts.
Renamed the tests because they are explicitly testing Curve25519 and
nothing else. Improved test coverage, test documentation and extended
in-code documentation with a specific reference to the standard as well.
The library is able to perform computations and cryptographic schemes on
curves with x coordinate ladder representation. Here we add the
capability to export such points.
The function `mbedtls_mpi_write_binary()` writes big endian byte order,
but we need to be able to write little endian in some caseses. (For
example when handling keys corresponding to Montgomery curves.)
Used `echo xx | tac -rs ..` to transform the test data to little endian.
The private keys used in ECDH differ in the case of Weierstrass and
Montgomery curves. They have different constraints, the former is based
on big endian, the latter little endian byte order. The fundamental
approach is different too:
- Weierstrass keys have to be in the right interval, otherwise they are
rejected.
- Any byte array of the right size is a valid Montgomery key and it
needs to be masked before interpreting it as a number.
Historically it was sufficient to use mbedtls_mpi_read_binary() to read
private keys, but as a preparation to improve support for Montgomery
curves we add mbedtls_ecp_read_key() to enable uniform treatment of EC
keys.
For the masking the `mbedtls_mpi_set_bit()` function is used. This is
suboptimal but seems to provide the best trade-off at this time.
Alternatives considered:
- Making a copy of the input buffer (less efficient)
- removing the `const` constraint from the input buffer (breaks the api
and makes it less user friendly)
- applying the mask directly to the limbs (violates the api between the
modules and creates and unwanted dependency)
The library is able to perform computations and cryptographic schemes on
curves with x coordinate ladder representation. Here we add the
capability to import such points.
The function `mbedtls_mpi_read_binary()` expects big endian byte order,
but we need to be able to read from little endian in some caseses. (For
example when handling keys corresponding to Montgomery curves.)
Used `echo xx | tac -rs .. | tr [a-z] [A-Z]` to transform the test data
to little endian and `echo "ibase=16;xx" | bc` to convert to decimal.
Add a test case for doing an ECDH calculation by calling
mbedtls_ecdh_get_params on both keys, with keys belonging to
different groups. This should fail, but currently passes.
Calling psa_*_setup() twice on a MAC, cipher, or hash context should
result in a PSA_ERROR_BAD_STATE error because the operation has already
been set up.
Fixes#10
Extend hash bad order test in line with the new bad order tests for MAC
and cipher, covering more cases and making comments and test layout
consistent.
Ensure that when doing hash operations out of order, PSA_ERROR_BAD_STATE
is returned as documented in crypto.h and the PSA Crypto specification.
In multipart cipher tests, test that each step of psa_cipher_update
produces output of the expected length. The length is hard-coded in
the test data since it depends on the mode.
The length of the output of psa_cipher_finish is effectively tested
because it's the total output length minus the length produced by the
update steps.
Test data obtained with Python+PyCrypto:
AES.new(key, mode=AES.MODE_CTR, counter=Crypto.Util.Counter.new(128, initial_value=0x2a2a2a2a2a2a2a2a2a2a2a2a2a2a2a2a)).encrypt(plaintext.decode('hex')).encode('hex')
The output length can be equal to the input length.
This wasn't noticed at runtime because we happened to only test with
CBC with the first chunk being a partial block.
Some calls to psa_cipher_finish or psa_cipher_update append to a
buffer. Several of these calls were not calculating the offset into
the buffer or the remaining buffer size correctly.
This did not lead to buffer overflows before because the buffer sizes
were sufficiently large for our test inputs. This did not lead to
incorrect output when the test was designed to append but actually
wrote too early because all the existing test cases either have no
output from finish (stream cipher) or have no output from update (CBC,
with less than one block of input).
The test function pkcs1_rsaes_v15_encrypt gets its fake-random input
for padding from a test parameter. In one test case, the parameter was
too short, causing a fallback to rand(). The reference output depends
on this random input, so the test data was correct only for a platform
with one particular rand() implementation. Supply sufficient
fake-random input so that rand() isn't called.
Check generator validity (i.e. that alg has been initialized) before
allowing reads from the generator or allowing reads of the generator's
capacity.
This aligns our implementation with the documented error code behavior
in our crypto.h and the PSA Crypto API.
PSA spec now defines more generic PSA storage types instead of the ITS
specific ones. This is necessary in order to integrate with
the newer implementation of PSA ITS landing in Mbed OS soon.

- psa_status_t replaces psa_its_status_t
- psa_storage_info_t replaces psa_its_info_t
- psa_storage_uid_t replaces psa_its_uid_t
Resolve conflicts by performing the following.

- Reject changes to Makefiles and CMake that are related to using Mbed
Crypto as a submodule. It doesn't make sense to use Mbed Crypto as a
submodule of itself.
- Reject README changes, as Mbed Crypto has its own, different README.
- Reject PSA-related changes to config.h. We don't want to disable the

- Don't inadvertently revert dead code removal in
mbedtls_cipher_write_tag() which was added in f2a7529403 ("Fix

- Where Mbed Crypto already had some MBEDTLS_USE_PSA_CRYPTO code (from
past companion PRs) take the latest version from Mbed TLS which
includes integration with MBEDTLS_CHECK_PARAMS.
- Update the version of the shared library files to match what's
currently present in Mbed TLS.
- Reject removal of testing with PSA from config full tests.
- Resolve conflicts in test tests/suites/helpers.function, where both
Mbed Crypto and Mbed TLS both added documentation for TEST_ASSERT.
Combine text from both documentation efforts.
- Reject adding a submodule of ourselves.
- Reject addition of submodule tests in all.sh.
- Reject addition of submodule to library path in
tests/scripts/run-test-suites.pl.
- Avoid using USE_CRYPTO_SUBMODULE=1 in
component_test_use_psa_crypto_full_cmake_asan() in all.sh.
Don't unconditionally enable PSA Crypto for all tests. Only enable it in
tests that require it. This allows crypto tests to check that
psa_crypto_init() fails when it is supposed to fail, since we want to
perform some action in a test, and then call psa_crypto_init() and check
the result without it having been called previously.
The existing test `x509parse_crt()` for X.509 CRT parsing
so far used the generic parsing API `mbedtls_x509_crt_parse()`
capable of parsing both PEM encoded and DER encoded certficates,
but was actually only used with DER encoded input data. Moreover,
as the purpose of the test is the testing of the core DER X.509 parsing
functionality, not the PEM vs. DER dispatch (which is now already tested
in the various `x509_crt_info()` tests), the call can be replaced with a
direct call to `mbedtls_x509_parse_crt_der()`.
This commit does that, and further adds to the test an analogous
call to the new API `mbedtls_x509_parse_crt_der_nocopy()` to test
copyless parsing of X.509 certificates.
Test that freshly-initialized contexts exhibit default behavior through
the API. Do this without depending on the internal representation of the
contexts. This provides better portability of our tests on compilers
like MSVC.
For must-fail asymmetric decryption tests, add an output size parameter
so that tests can directly control what output buffer size they allocate
and use independently from the key size used. This enables better
testing of behavior with various output buffer sizes.
When RSA decrypting, unlike with RSA encrypting, we sometimes expect the
output length will be less than the key size. For instance, in the case
where the plaintext is zero-length we expect the output length of the
decryption to be zero-length as well, not key size in length.
For must-fail tests, we don't expect output-buffer-sized RSA-decryption,
only that the output length is less than or equal to the output size, so
these tests remain unchanged.
Change the must-pass tests to expect that the actual output size is
equal to the expected length of the output buffer instead of always
being the key size.
Merge a development version of Mbed TLS 2.16.0 that doesn't have
parameter validation into development.
The following conflicts were resolved:
- Update ChangeLog to include release notes merged from development so
far, with a version of "2.14.0+01b34fb316a5" and release date of
"xxxx-xx-xx" to show this is not a released version, but instead a
snapshot of the development branch equivalent to version of the 2.14.0
with additional commits from the mbedtls/development branch up through
01b34fb316 included. Entries added for unreleased versions of Mbed
Crypto remain at the top of the file for Mbed TLS 2.xx.x.
- Replace the Mbed Crypto version of
mbedtls_rsa_rsaes_pkcs1_v15_decrypt() with the version from Mbed TLS
which fixes timing variations and memory access variations that could
lead to a Bleichenbacher-style padding oracle attack. This will
prevent using psa_asymmetric_decrypt() with zero-length output buffers
until a follow up commit is made to restore this capability.
- In ssl_srv.c, include changes for both the new ECDH interface and
opaque PSK as already added to development previously.
In one place, exercise_key was used in a such a way that if the test
failed inside exercise_key, the test suite would correctly report the
test as failed but would not report the exact location of the failure.
Fix this.
Add documentation for exercise_key that explains how to use it.
Additional changes to temporarily enable running tests:
ssl_srv.c and test_suite_ecdh use mbedtls_ecp_group_load instead of
mbedtls_ecdh_setup
test_suite_ctr_drbg uses mbedtls_ctr_drbg_update instead of
mbedtls_ctr_drbg_update_ret

the logic to combine the source and target, so it's ok to have less

Remove the type and bits arguments to psa_allocate_key() and

know exactly how much space to allocate for the slot, but many
implementations (including ours) don't care, and it's possible to work
around their lack by deferring size-dependent actions to the time when
the key material is created. They are a burden to applications and
make the API more complex, and the benefits aren't worth it.
Change the API and adapt the implementation, the units test and the
sample code accordingly.
Change the key derivation API to take inputs in multiple steps,
instead of a single one-site-fits-poorly function.

hash-and-sign algorithm in a policy. Then the policy allows usage with
this hash-and-sign family with any hash.
Test that PSA_ALG_ANY_HASH-based policies allow a specific hash, but
not a different hash-and-sign family. Test that PSA_ALG_ANY_HASH is
not valid for operations, only in policies.
Test for a subclass of public-key algorithm: those that perform
full-domain hashing, i.e. algorithms that can be broken down as
sign(key, hash(message)).

code that was shared between RSA and other key types (like EC keys) to
be used only with non-RSA keys.

Dependent on configured options, not all of the helper functions were being
used, which was leading to warning of unused functions with Clang.
To avoid any complex compile time options, or adding more logic to
generate_test_code.py to screen out unused functions, those functions which were
provoking the warning were changed to remove static, remove them from file
scope, and expose them to the linker.
Change the way some lines are wrapped to cut at a more logical place.
This commit mainly rewrites multi-line calls to TEST_EQUAL, and also a
few calls to PSA_ASSERT.
This commit is the result of the following command, followed by
reindenting (but not wrapping lines):
perl -00 -i -pe 's/^( *)TEST_ASSERT\(([^;=]*)(?: |\n *)==([^;=]*)\);$/${1}TEST_EQUAL($2,$3);/gm' tests/suites/test_suite_psa_*.function

Cause a compilation error on ARRAY_LENGTH(p) where p is a pointer as
opposed to an array. This only works under GCC and compatible
compilers such as Clang. On other compilers, ARRAY_LENGTH works but
doesn't check the type of its argument.
Document when a context must be initialized or not, when it must be
set up or not, and whether it needs a private key or a public key will
do.
The implementation is sometimes more liberal than the documentation,
accepting a non-set-up context as a context that can't perform the
requested information. This preserves backward compatibility.
The MPI_VALIDATE_RET() macro cannot be used for parameter
validation of mbedtls_mpi_lsb() because this function returns
a size_t.
Use the underlying MBEDTLS_INTERNAL_VALIDATE_RET() insteaed,
returning 0 on failure.
Also, add a test for this behaviour.
For mbedtls_pk_parse_key and mbedtls_pk_parse_keyfile, the password is
optional. Clarify what this means: NULL is ok and means no password.
Validate parameters and test accordingly.
The test that mbedtls_aria_free() accepts NULL parameters
can be performed even if MBEDTLS_CHECK_PARAMS is unset, but
was previously included in the test case aria_invalid_params()
which is only executed if MBEDTLS_CHECK_PARAMS is set.
Parameter validation was previously performed and tested unconditionally
for the ChaCha/Poly modules. This commit therefore only needs go guard the
existing tests accordingly and use the appropriate test macros for parameter
validation.
This commit finishes the removal of support for direct access to key
slots in psa_crypto.c.
This marks the end of the necessary phase of the transition to key
handles. The code should subsequently be refactored to move key slot
management from psa_crypto.c to psa_crypto_slot_management.c.
Switch from the direct use of slot numbers to handles allocated by
psa_allocate_key.
The general principle for each function is:
* Change `psa_key_slot_t slot` to `psa_key_handle_t handle` or
`psa_key_id_t key_id` depending on whether it's used as a handle to
an open slot or as a persistent name for a key.
* Call psa_create_key() before using a slot, instead of calling
psa_set_key_lifetime to make a slot persistent.
Remove the unit test persistent_key_is_configurable which is no longer
relevant.
Switch from the direct use of slot numbers to handles allocated by
psa_allocate_key.
This commit does not affect persistent key tests except for the one
test function in test_suite_psa_crypto that uses persistent keys
(persistent_key_load_key_from_storage).
The general principle for each function is:
* Change `psa_key_slot_t slot` to `psa_key_handle_t handle`.
* Call psa_allocate_key() before setting the policy of the slot,
or before creating key material in functions that don't set a policy.
* Some PSA_ERROR_EMPTY_SLOT errors become PSA_ERROR_INVALID_HANDLE
because there is now a distinction between not having a valid
handle, and having a valid handle to a slot that doesn't contain key
material.
* In tests that use symmetric keys, calculate the max_bits parameters
of psa_allocate_key() from the key data size. In tests where the key
may be asymmetric, call an auxiliary macro KEY_BITS_FROM_DATA which
returns an overapproximation. There's no good way to find a good
value for max_bits with the API, I think the API should be tweaked.
Implement psa_allocate_key, psa_open_key, psa_create_key,
psa_close_key.
Add support for keys designated to handles to psa_get_key_slot, and
thereby to the whole API.
Allocated and non-allocated keys can coexist. This is a temporary
stage in order to transition from the use of direct slot numbers to
allocated handles only. Once all the tests and sample programs have
been migrated to use handles, the implementation will be simplified
and made more robust with support for handles only.
Previously, one could change the definition of AES_VALIDATE_RET() to return
some other code than MBEDTLS_ERR_AES_BAD_INPUT_DATA, and the test suite
wouldn't notice. Now this modification would make the suite fail as expected.
The test framework for validation of parameters depends on the macro
MBEDTLS_PARAM_FAILED() being set to its default value when building the
library. So far the test framework attempted to define this macro but this was
the wrong place - this definition wouldn't be picked by the library.
Instead, a different approach is taken: skip those tests when the macro is
defined in config.h, as in that case we have no way to know if it will indeed
end up calling mbedtls_param_failed() as we need it to.
This commit was tested by manually ensuring that aes_invalid_params:
- passes (and is not skipped) in the default configuration
- is skipped when MBEDTLS_PARAM_FAILED() is defined in config.h
The previous prototype gave warnings are the strings produced by #cond and
__FILE__ are const, so we shouldn't implicitly cast them to non-const.
While at it modifying most example programs:
- include the header that has the function declaration, so that the definition
can be checked to match by the compiler
- fix whitespace
- make it work even if PLATFORM_C is not defined:
- CHECK_PARAMS is not documented as depending on PLATFORM_C and there is
no reason why it should
- so, remove the corresponding #if defined in each program...
- and add missing #defines for mbedtls_exit when needed
The result has been tested (make all test with -Werror) with the following
configurations:
- full with CHECK_PARAMS with PLATFORM_C
- full with CHECK_PARAMS without PLATFORM_C
- full without CHECK_PARAMS without PLATFORM_C
- full without CHECK_PARAMS with PLATFORM_C
Additionally, it has been manually tested that adding
mbedtls_aes_init( NULL );
near the normal call to mbedtls_aes_init() in programs/aes/aescrypt2.c has the
expected effect when running the program.
It was inconsistent between files: sometimes 3 arguments, sometimes one.
Align to 1 argument for the macro and 3 for the function, because:
- we don't need 3 arguments for the macro, it can add __FILE__ and __LINE__
in its expansion, while the function needs them as parameters to be correct;
- people who re-defined the macro should have flexibility, and 3 arguments
can give the impression they they don't have as much as they actually do;
- the design document has the macro with 1 argument, so let's stick to that.
Change the use of setjmp and longjmp in signalling parameter validation failures
when using the MBEDTLS_CHECK_PARAMS config.h option. This change allows
all calls which might result in a call to the parameter validation failure
handler to always be caught, even without use of the new macros, by placing a
setjmp() in the outer function which calls the test function, which the handler
can jump to.
This has several benefits:
* it allows us to remove the clang compiler warning (-Wclobbered) caused
by local auto variables being in the same function as the call to setjmp.
* removes the need to wrap all function calls in the test functions with the
TEST_ASSERT() macro. Now all parameter validation function calls should be
caught.
The tests for the ECDH key exchange that use the context accessed it
directly. This can't work with the new context, where we can't make any
assumptions about the implementation of the context. This commit works
around this problem and comes with the cost of allocating an extra
structures on the stack when executing the test.
One of the tests is testing an older interface for the sake of backward
compatibility. The new ECDH context is not backward compatible and this
test doesn't make any sense for it, therefore we skip this test in
non-legacy mode.
Programs must not include mbedtls/platform.h if MBEDTLS_PLATFORM_C is
not defined. Test suites don't need to include mbedtls/platform.h
because helpers.function takes care of it.
This commit also removes a stray `;` which is technically not standard C.
The recently added `mbedtls_ecdh_setup()` function is not used in the
tests yet. This commit adapts the tests to the new workflow.
Having done that, the old lifecycle is not tested anymore, so we add a
new test to ensure backward compatibility.
Add missing compilation guards that broke the build if either GCM or
CCM was not defined.
Add missing guards on test cases that require GCM or CBC.
The build and tests now pass for any subset of {MBEDTLS_CCM_C,
MBEDTLS_GCM_C}. There are still unused variables warnings if neither
is defined.
Since the AD too long is a limitation on Mbed TLS,
HW accelerators may support this. Run the test for AD too long,
only if `MBEDTLS_CCM_ALT` is not defined.
Addresses comment in #1996.
Write an all-bits-zero NV seed file for the tests. Without this, if
the seed file is not present when this test suite is executed, the
PSA module initialization will fail, causing most test cases to fail.
Also write an all-bits-zero NV seed file at the end. The test cases in
this test suite mess with the file, but subsequent test suites may
need it.
When testing with custom entropy sources, if MBEDTLS_ENTROPY_NV_SEED
is enabled at compile time but the NV seed source is not used at
runtime, mbedtls_entropy_func makes a second pass anyway. Cope with
this in the test code by telling the entropy module not to make this
second pass.
Add a function to configure entropy sources. For testing only.
Use it to test that the library initialization fails properly if there is no
entropy source.
It's better for names in the API to describe the "what" (opaque keys) rather
than the "how" (using PSA), at least since we don't intend to have multiple
function doing the same "what" in different ways in the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately the can_do wrapper does not receive the key context as an
argument, so it cannot check psa_get_key_information(). Later we might want to
change our internal structures to fix this, but for now we'll just restrict
opaque PSA keys to be ECDSA keypairs, as this is the only thing we need for
now. It also simplifies testing a bit (no need to test each key type).
While at it, clarify who's responsible for destroying the underlying key. That
can't be us because some keys cannot be destroyed and we wouldn't know. So
let's leave that up to the caller.
The test suites `test_suite_gcm.aes{128,192,256}_en.data` contains
numerous NIST test vectors for AES-*-GCM against which the GCM
API mbedtls_gcm_xxx() is tested.
However, one level higher at the cipher API, no tests exist which
exercise mbedtls_cipher_auth_{encrypt/decrypt}() for GCM ciphers,
although test_suite_cipher.function contains the test auth_crypt_tv
which does precisely that and is already used e.g. in
test_suite_cipher.ccm.
This commit replicates the test vectors from
test_suite_gcm.aes{128,192,256}_en.data in test_suite_cipher.gcm.data
and adds a run of auth_crypt_tv for each of them.
The conversion was mainly done through the sed command line
```
s/gcm_decrypt_and_verify:\([^:]*\):\([^:]*\):\([^:]*\):\([^:]*\):
\([^:]*\):\([^:]*\):\([^:]*\):\([^:]*\):\([^:]*\):\([^:]*\)/auth_crypt_tv:
\1:\2:\4:\5:\3:\7:\8:\9/
```
Allow mbedtls_psa_crypto_free to be called twice, or without a prior
call to psa_crypto_init. Keep track of the initialization state more
precisely in psa_crypto_init so that mbedtls_psa_crypto_free knows
what to do.

can't be us because some keys cannot be destroyed and we wouldn't know. So
let's leave that up to the caller.
Allow use of persistent keys, including configuring them, importing and
exporting them, and destroying them.
When getting a slot using psa_get_key_slot, there are 3 scenarios that
can occur if the keys lifetime is persistent:
1. Key type is PSA_KEY_TYPE_NONE, no persistent storage entry:
- The key slot is treated as a standard empty key slot
2. Key type is PSA_KEY_TYPE_NONE, persistent storage entry exists:
- Attempt to load the key from persistent storage
3. Key type is not PSA_KEY_TYPE_NONE:
- As checking persistent storage on every use of the key could
be expensive, the persistent key is assumed to be saved in
persistent storage, the in-memory key is continued to be used.
Add new functions, psa_load_persistent_key(),
psa_free_persistent_key_data(), and psa_save_persistent_key(), for
managing persistent keys. These functions load to or save from our
internal representation of key slots. Serialization is a concern of the
storage backend implementation and doesn't abstraction-leak into the
lifetime management code.
An initial implementation for files is provided. Additional storage
backends can implement this interface for other storage types.

There was no test case of ECDH with anything other than
PSA_ALG_SELECT_RAW. Exercise the code path from ECDH through a
"proper" KDF.
ECDH shared secret copied from an existing test, HKDF output
calculated with Cryptodome.
In ECDH key agreement, allow a public key with the OID id-ECDH, not
just a public key with the OID id-ecPublicKey.
Public keys with the OID id-ECDH are not permitted by psa_import_key,
at least for now. There would be no way to use the key for a key
agreement operation anyway in the current API.
Add test cases that do key agreement with raw selection in pieces, to
validate that selection works even when the application doesn't read
everything in one chunk.
A key selection algorithm is similar to a key derivation algorithm in
that it takes a secret input and produces a secret output stream.
However, unlike key derivation algorithms, there is no expectation
that the input cannot be reconstructed from the output. Key selection
algorithms are exclusively meant to be used on the output of a key
agreement algorithm to select chunks of the shared secret.
`test_hkdf` in the hkdf test suites consumed stack of ~6KB with
6 buffers of ~1KB each. This causes stack overflow on some platforms
with smaller stack. The buffer sizes were reduced. By testing, the sizes
can be reduced even further, as the largest seen size is 82 bytes(for okm).
On key import and key generation, for RSA, reject key sizes that are
not a multiple of 8. Such keys are not well-supported in Mbed TLS and
are hardly ever used in practice.
The previous commit removed support for non-byte-aligned keys at the
PSA level. This commit actively rejects such keys and adds
corresponding tests (test keys generated with "openssl genrsa").
We had only allocated 40 bytes for printing into, but we wanted to print 46
bytes. Update the buffer to be 47 bytes, which is large enough to hold what
we want to print plus a terminating null byte.
Simplify the test case "PSA export a slot after a failed import of an
EC keypair": use an invalid private value for the specified curve. Now
the dependencies match the test data, so this fixes curves.pl.
Update some test data from the asymmetric_apis_coverage branch that
wasn't updated to the new format from the
psa-asymmetric-format-raw_private_key branch.
1. New test for testing bad order of hash function calls.
2. Removed test hash_update_bad_paths since it's test scenario
was moved to the new test.
3. Moved some scenarios from test hash_verify_bad_paths to
the new test.
1. Rename hash_bad_paths to hash_verify_bad_paths
2. Add test hash_update_bad_paths
3. Add test hash_finish_bad_paths
The different scenarios tested as part of hash_bad_paths are
moved to the relevant test.
This commit introduces variants test-ca_utf8.crt,
test-ca_printablestring.crt and test-ca_uppercase.crt
of tests/data_files/test-ca.crt which differ from
test-ca.crt in their choice of string encoding and
upper and lower case letters in the DN field. These
changes should be immaterial to the recovation check,
and three tests are added that crl.pem, which applies
to test-ca.crt, is also considered as applying to
test-ca_*.crt.
The test files were generated using PR #1641 which
- adds a build instruction for test-ca.crt to
tests/data_files/Makefile which allows easy
change of the subject DN.
- changes the default string format from `PrintableString`
to `UTF8String`.
Specifically:
- `test-ca_utf8.crt` was generated by running
`rm test-ca.crt && make test-ca.crt`
on PR #1641.
- `test-ca_uppercase.crt`, too, was generated by running
`rm test-ca.crt && make test-ca.crt`
on PR #1641, after modifying the subject DN line in the build
instruction for `test-ca.crt` in `tests/data_files/Makefile`.
- `test-ca_printable.crt` is a copy of `test-ca.crt`
because at the time of this commit, `PrintableString` is
still the default string format.
This commit introduces variants test-ca_utf8.crt,
test-ca_printablestring.crt and test-ca_uppercase.crt
of tests/data_files/test-ca.crt which differ from
test-ca.crt in their choice of string encoding and
upper and lower case letters in the DN field. These
changes should be immaterial to the recovation check,
and three tests are added that crl.pem, which applies
to test-ca.crt, is also considered as applying to
test-ca_*.crt.
streamline the API for the test test_derive_invalid_generator_state: by removing
the key_data parameter.
This parameter is not important for test flow and can be hard-coded.
Add boundary test cases for private key validity for a short
Weierstrass curve (0 < d < n).
Remove obsolete test cases "valid key but wrong curve". With the new
format, the private key representation does not contain an encoding of
the curve.
In preparation for the import/export format change for private
elliptic curve keys from RFC 5915 to the raw secret value,
remove ASN.1-based sanity checks. For the raw secret value, most byte
strings of the correct length are valid (the details depend on the
curve), so as a sanity check, just check the length.
In preparation for the import/export format change for private
elliptic curve keys from RFC 5915 to the raw secret value, transform the
test data to the new format.
Tests will not pass until the implementation has been changed to the
new format and some test cases and test functions have been adjusted.
I used the script below to look for lines containing a
PSA_KEY_TYPE_ECC_KEYPAIR and change the first hex string in the
line with an ASN.1 header that looks like the beginning of an RFC 5915
ECPrivateKey. This always happens to be a private key input.
perl -a -F: -i -pe 'sub pad { local ($_) = @_; s/^00// if length == $digits + 2; die if length > $digits; sprintf("\"%0${digits}s\"", $_) } if ($F[0] !~ /\W/ && /:PSA_KEY_TYPE_ECC_KEYPAIR\( *PSA_ECC_CURVE_[A-Z_]+([0-9]+)/) {$digits = int(($1+7)/8)*2; s/"30(?:[0-7].|81..|82....)02010104(..)([0-9a-f]+)"/pad(substr($2, 0, hex($1)*2))/ie}' tests/suites/test_suite_psa_crypto.data
In the test function for export_public_key, don't just check the
length of the result. Compare the actual result to the expected
result.
Take an extra argument that allows using an export buffer that's
larger or smaller than needed. Zero is the size given by
PSA_KEY_EXPORT_MAX_SIZE.
Don't check the output of psa_get_key_information. That's useful in
import_export because it tests both import and export, but not in
import_export_public_key whose goal is only to test public key export.
This commit adjusts the existing test data but does not add new test
cases.
Key derivation test now uses an indirect way to test generator validity
as the direct way previously used isn't compatible with the PSA IPC
implementation. Additional bad path test for the generator added
to check basic bad-path scenarios.
Add comments noting that the maximum length of a MAC must fit in
PSA_ALG_MAC_TRUNCATION_MASK. Add a unit test that verifies that the
maximum MAC size fits.
Extend the mbedtls_mpi_is_prime_det test to check that it reports
the number as prime when testing rounds-1 rounds, then reports the
number as composite when testing the full number of rounds.
When using a primality testing function the tolerable error rate depends
on the scheme in question, the required security strength and wether it
is used for key generation or parameter validation. To support all use
cases we need more flexibility than what the old API provides.
Primality tests have to deal with different distribution when generating
primes and when validating primes.
These new tests are testing if mbedtls_mpi_is_prime() is working
properly in the latter setting.
The new tests involve pseudoprimes with maximum number of
non-witnesses. The non-witnesses were generated by printing them
from mpi_miller_rabin(). The pseudoprimes were generated by the
following function:
void gen_monier( mbedtls_mpi* res, int nbits )
{
mbedtls_mpi p_2x_plus_1, p_4x_plus_1, x, tmp;
mbedtls_mpi_init( &p_2x_plus_1 );
mbedtls_mpi_init( &p_4x_plus_1 );
mbedtls_mpi_init( &x ); mbedtls_mpi_init( &tmp );
do
{
mbedtls_mpi_gen_prime( &p_2x_plus_1, nbits >> 1, 0,
rnd_std_rand, NULL );
mbedtls_mpi_sub_int( &x, &p_2x_plus_1, 1 );
mbedtls_mpi_div_int( &x, &tmp, &x, 2 );
if( mbedtls_mpi_get_bit( &x, 0 ) == 0 )
continue;
mbedtls_mpi_mul_int( &p_4x_plus_1, &x, 4 );
mbedtls_mpi_add_int( &p_4x_plus_1, &p_4x_plus_1, 1 );
if( mbedtls_mpi_is_prime( &p_4x_plus_1, rnd_std_rand,
NULL ) == 0 )
break;
} while( 1 );
mbedtls_mpi_mul_mpi( res, &p_2x_plus_1, &p_4x_plus_1 );
}
Pass the nonce first, then the AD, then the input. This is the order
in which the data is processed and it's the order of the parameters to
the API functions.
Functional tests for various payload sizes and output buffer sizes.
When the padding is bad or the plaintext is too large for the output
buffer, verify that function writes some outputs. This doesn't
validate that the implementation is time-constant, but it at least
validates that it doesn't just return early without outputting anything.
Add signing tests with 528-bit and 520-bit RSA keys with SHA-512. These
selections of key and hash size should lead to an error returned, as
there is not enough room for our chosen minimum salt size of two bytes
less than the hash size. These test the boundary around an available
salt length of 0 or -1 bytes.
The RSA keys were generated with OpenSSL 1.1.1-pre8.

Since we wish to generate RSASSA-PSS signatures even when hashes are
relatively large for the chosen RSA key size, we need some tests. Our
main focus will be on 1024-bit keys and the couple key sizes larger than
it. For example, we test for a signature generated using a salt length
of 63 when a 1032-bit key is used. Other tests check the boundary
conditions around other key sizes. We want to make sure we don't use a
salt length larger than the hash length (because FIPS 186-4 requires
this). We also want to make sure we don't use a salt that is too small
(no smaller than 2 bytes away from the hash length).
Test RSASSA-PSS signatures with:
- 1024-bit key and SHA-512 (slen 62)
- 1032-bit key and SHA-512 (slen 63)
- 1040-bit key and SHA-512 (slen 64)
- 1048-bit key and SHA-512 (slen 64)
The tests also verify that we can properly verify the RSASSA-PSS
signatures we've generated.
We've manually verified that OpenSSL 1.1.1-pre8 can verify the
RSASSA-PSS signatures we've generated.

We've also added a new test that ensures we can properly validate a
RSASSA-PSS 1032-bit signature with SHA-512 generated by OpenSSL. This
has been added as the "RSASSA-PSS Verify OpenSSL-generated Signature
1032-bit w/SHA-512" test. The signature to verify was generated with the
following command line.
$ cat message.bin | openssl dgst -sha512 -sigopt rsa_padding_mode:pss -sigopt rsa_pss_saltlen:63 -sign rsa1032.pem > valid.bin
The RSA private keys used by these tests were generated with OpenSSL

It should be valid to RSASSA-PSS sign a SHA-512 hash with a 1024-bit or
1032-bit RSA key, but with the salt size being always equal to the hash
size, this isn't possible: the key is too small.
To enable use of hashes that are relatively large compared to the key
size, allow reducing the salt size to no less than the hash size minus 2
bytes. We don't allow salt sizes smaller than the hash size minus 2
bytes because that too significantly changes the security guarantees the
library provides compared to the previous implementation which always
used a salt size equal to the hash size. The new calculated salt size
remains compliant with FIPS 186-4.
We also need to update the "hash too large" test, since we now reduce
the salt size when certain key sizes are used. We used to not support
1024-bit keys with SHA-512, but now we support this by reducing the salt
size to 62. Update the "hash too large" test to use a 1016-bit RSA key
with SHA-512, which still has too large of a hash because we will not
reduce the salt size further than 2 bytes shorter than the hash size.
The RSA private key used for the test was generated using "openssl
genrsa 1016" using OpenSSL 1.1.1-pre8.

This commit fixes some missing size comparison. In
aead_encrypt_decrypt, aead_encrypt and aead_decrypt, the test code
would not have noticed if the library function had reported an output
length that was not the expected length.
ASSERT_COMPARE tests that the two buffers have the same size and
content. The intended use is to replace TEST_ASSERT( size1 == size2 )
followed by memcmp on the content. Keep using memcmp when comparing
two buffers that have the same size by construction.
This commit resolves a bug whereby some test cases failed on systems
where mbedtls_calloc returns NULL when the size of 0, because the test
case asserted `pointer != NULL` regardless of the size.
The new macro ASSERT_ALLOC allocates memory with mbedtls_calloc and
fails the test if the allocation fails. It outputs a null pointer if
the requested size is 0. It is meant to replace existing calls to
mbedtls_calloc.
Setting the dh_flag to 1 used to indicate that the caller requests safe
primes from mbedtls_mpi_gen_prime. We generalize the functionality to
make room for more flags in that parameter.
If some algorithms are excluded in the build, it's ok for the corresponding
macros not to give the correct results. Therefore the corresponding test cases
should depend on the implementation of the algorithm. For example, it's ok for
PSA_HASH_MAX_SIZE to be less than PSA_HASH_SIZE(PSA_ALG_SHA_512) if we build
without SHA-512 support, and we indeed do this. It's even ok for an
implementation to return 0 for PSA_ALG_IS_HASH(PSA_ALG_SHA_512) if it doesn't
support SHA-512; we return 1 anyway but the tests are less
implementation-specific if we don't enforce it.
This commit adds dependencies on symbols that don't exist in Mbed TLS,
for algorithms that Mbed TLS doesn't implement. These are:
MBEDTLS_SHA512_256 for SHA-512/256, MBEDTLS_SHA3_C for SHA-3,
MBEDTLS_DSA_C and MBEDTLS_DSA_DETERMINISTIC for DSA, and
MBEDTLS_ECP_DP_xxx_ENABLED for elliptic curves that have a PSA
encoding but are not supported in Mbed TLS.
For all key types, validate feature test macros (PSA_KEY_TYPE_IS_xxx).
For asymmetric keys (public key or key pair), validate the
corresponding public/pair type.
For ECC keys, validate GET_CURVE.
For all algorithms, validate feature test macros (PSA_ALG_IS_xxx).
For hash algorithms, validate the exact hash size, and validate
xxx_GET_HASH macros on dependent algorithms.
For MAC algorithms, validate the MAC size. For AEAD algorithms,
validate the tag size.
There is a separate test case for each HMAC algorithm, which is
necessary because each has its own MAC size. For other hash-dependent
algorithms, there is no interesting variation to test here, so only
one hash gets tested.
OFB and CFB are streaming modes. XTS is a not a cipher mode but it
doesn't use a separate padding step. This leaves only CBC as a block
cipher mode that needs a padding step.
Since CBC is the only mode that uses a separate padding step, and is
likely to remain the only mode in the future, encode the padding mode
directly in the algorithm constant, rather than building up an
algorithm value from a chaining mode and a padding mode. This greatly
simplifies the interface as well as some parts of the implementation.
Don't rely on static initialization of a flexible array member, that's
a GNU extension. The previous code also triggered a Clang warning
"suggest braces around initialization of subobject" (-Wmissing-braces)
for `struct {char a[]} = {"foo"}`.
This is not useful to validate the implementation when importing
canonical input, which is the case for most import/export test cases,
but it helps validate the sanity checks themselves.
Implement sanity checks of exported public keys, using ASN.1 parsing.
Rewrite the sanity checks of key pairs using ASN.1 parsing, so as to
check more things with simpler code.
Move the code to perform sanity checks on the exported key from
generate_key to exercise_key. This way the sanity checks can be
performed after importing or deriving a key as well.
In addition to checking the exported key if its usage allows it, check
the exported public key if the key is asymmetric.
The last slot in the array was not freed due to an off-by-one error.
Amend the fill_slots test to serve as a non-regression test for this
issue: without this bug fix, it would cause a memory leak.
In psa_generator_import_key, if generating a DES or 3DES key, set the
parity bits.
Add tests for deriving a DES key. Also test deriving an AES key while
I'm at it.
In psa_generator_hkdf_read, return BAD_STATE if we're trying to
construct more output than the algorithm allows. This can't happen
through the API due to the capacity limit, but it could potentially
happen in an internal call.
Also add a test case that verifies that we can set up HKDF with its
maximum capacity and read up to the maximum capacity.
New key type PSA_KEY_TYPE_DERIVE. New usage flag PSA_KEY_USAGE_DERIVE.
New function psa_key_derivation.
No key derivation algorithm is implemented yet. The code may not
compile with -Wunused.
Write some unit test code for psa_key_derivation. Most of it cannot be
used yet due to the lack of a key derivation algorithm.
In asymmetric_encrypt_decrypt, use the buffer size advertized by the
library for the ciphertext, and the length of the plaintext for the
re-decrypted output.
Test the output length if known. Require it to be 0 on error for
encrypt/decrypt functions. If the output length is unknown, test at
least that it's within the buffer limits.
Add a label argument to all asymmetric encryption test functions
(currently empty in all tests, but that will change soon).
In asymmetric_encrypt and asymmetric_decrypt, with an empty label,
test with both a null pointer and a non-null pointer.
Although RSASSA-PSS defines its input as a message to be hashed, we
implement a sign-the-hash function. This function can take an input
which isn't a hash, so don't restrict the size of the input, any more
than Mbed TLS does.
Remove a redundant check that hash_length fits in unsigned int for the
sake of Mbed TLS RSA functions.
Test that PSS accepts inputs of various lengths. For PKCS#1 v1.5
signature in raw mode, test the maximum input length.
This required tweaking exercise_signature_key to use a payload size
for the signature based on the algorithm, since our implementation of
PSS requires that the input size matches the hash size. This would
also be the case for PKCS#1 v1.5 with a specified hash.
* No test depends on MBEDTLS_PK_C except via MBEDTLS_PK_PARSE_C, so
remove MBEDTLS_PK_C and keep only MBEDTLS_PK_PARSE_C.
* Add MBEDTLS_PK_WRITE_C for pk export tests.
* Add MBEDTLS_GENPRIME for RSA key generation tests.
* Add dependencies to AEAD tests.
* Add missing dependencies to many RSA tests.
* Add a test for decryption with invalid padding.
* Add a test for encryption with input too large.
* In negative tests, pass input whose length matches the key length,
unless that's what the test is about.
Make function names for multipart operations more consistent (cipher
edition).
Rename symmetric cipher multipart operation functions so that they all
start with psa_cipher_:
* psa_encrypt_setup -> psa_cipher_encrypt_setup
* psa_decrypt_setup -> psa_cipher_decrypt_setup
* psa_encrypt_set_iv -> psa_cipher_set_iv
* psa_encrypt_generate_iv -> psa_cipher_generate_iv
Change most asymmetric_verify to use public keys (they were all using
key pairs before). Keep one test with an RSA key pair and one with an
EC key pair.
Revise the test function asymmetric_encrypt_fail into
asymmetric_encrypt and use it for positive tests as well. Get the
expected output length from PSA_ASYMMETRIC_ENCRYPT_OUTPUT_SIZE. Check
the actual output length against test data.
Add positive test cases for encryption: one with an RSA public
key (this is the only test for encryption with a public key rather
than a key pair) and one with a key pair.
Make function names for multipart operations more consistent (MAC
setup edition).
Split psa_mac_setup into two functions psa_mac_sign_setup and
psa_mac_verify_setup. These functions behave identically except that
they require different usage flags on the key. The goal of the split
is to enforce the key policy during setup rather than at the end of
the operation (which was a bit of a hack).
In psa_mac_sign_finish and psa_mac_verify_finish, if the operation is
of the wrong type, abort the operation before returning BAD_STATE.
No common signature algorithm uses a salt (RSA-PKCS#1v1.5, RSA-PSS,
DSA, ECDSA, EdDSA). We don't even take an IV for MAC whereas MAC
algorithms with IV are uncommon but heard of. So remove the salt
parameter from psa_asymmetric_sign and psa_asymmetric_verify.
Add tests of key policy checks for MAC, cipher, AEAD, asymmetric
encryption and asymmetric signature. For each category, test
with/without the requisite usage flag in each direction, and test
algorithm mismatch.
At this point it fixes memory leaks as well. These memory leaks are the
fault of the 'psa_cipher_finish()' function and the calls fixed in this
commit (among with many others in the test suite) will become obsolete
after fixing 'psa_cipher_finish()'.
Add required includes in tests and psa_crypto.c file in order to be able to compilef for the SPM solution.
Some functions needed to be deprecated from psa_crypto.c since they already implemented in the SPM.
Use PSA_BLOCK_CIPHER_BLOCK_SIZE() macro to get the cipher block size instead of accessing the operation struct
additionally, for SPM case, the 'block_size' member is not a member in the operation struct
In tests that had a hard-coded buffer size, use PSA_MAC_MAX_SIZE or
PSA_ASYMMETRIC_SIGNATURE_MAX_SIZE as appropriate.
Test that PSA_xxx_MAX_SIZE is larger than the size used in tests that
expect a specific output.
Change the representation of an ECDSA signature from the ASN.1 DER
encoding used in TLS and X.509, to the concatenation of r and s
in big-endian order with a fixed size. A fixed size helps memory and
buffer management and this representation is generally easier to use
for anything that doesn't require the ASN.1 representation. This is
the same representation as PKCS#11 (Cryptoki) except that PKCS#11
allows r and s to be truncated (both to the same length), which
complicates the implementation and negates the advantage of a
fixed-size representation.
* Distinguish randomized ECDSA from deterministic ECDSA.
* Deterministic ECDSA needs to be parametrized by a hash.
* Randomized ECDSA only uses the hash for the initial hash step,
but add ECDSA(hash) algorithms anyway so that all the signature
algorithms encode the initial hashing step.
* Add brief documentation for the ECDSA signature mechanisms.
* Also define DSA signature mechanisms while I'm at it. There were
already key types for DSA.
* PSS needs to be parametrized by a hash.
* Don't use `_MGF1` in the names of macros for OAEP and PSS. No one
ever uses anything else.
* Add brief documentation for the RSA signature mechanisms.
Add a negative test for import where the expected key is an EC key
with the correct key size, but the wrong curve. Change the test that
tries to import an RSA key when an EC key is expected to have the
expected key size.
Because exporting-public a symmetric key fails, we have no reasonable
expectation that the exported key length has any value at all other than
something obviously incorrect or "empty", like a key with a length of 0.
Our current implementation explicitly sets the exported key length to 0
on errors, so test for this. Fix the "PSA import/export-public: cannot
export-public a symmetric key" test to expect a key length of 0 instead
of 162.
Make psa_export_key() always set a valid data_length when exporting,
even when there are errors. This makes the API easier to use for buggy
programs (like our test code).
Our test code previously used exported_length uninitialized when
checking to see that the buffer returned was all zero in import_export()
in the case where an error was returned from psa_export_key().
Initialize exported_length to an invalid length, and check that it gets
set properly by psa_export_key(), to avoid this using export_length
uninitialized. Note that the mem_is_zero() check is still valid when
psa_export_key() returns an error, e.g. where exported_length is 0, as
we want to check that nothing was written to the buffer on error.
Out test code also previous passed NULL for the data_length parameter of
psa_export_key() when it expected a failure (in key_policy_fail()).
However, data_length is not allowed to be NULL, especially now that we
write to data_length from psa_export_key() even when there are errors.
Update the test code to not pass in a NULL data_length.
It isn't used to define other macros and it doesn't seem that useful
for users. Remove it, we can reintroduce it if needed.
Define a similar function key_type_is_raw_bytes in the implementation
with a clear semantics: it's a key that's represented as a struct
raw_data.
In the test generate_random, focus on testing that psa_generate_random
is writing all the bytes of the output buffer and no more. Add a check
that it is writing to each byte of the output buffer. Do not try to
look for repeating output as the structure of a unit test isn't likely
to catch that sort of problem anyway.
Also add what was missing in the test suite to support block ciphers
with a block size that isn't 16.
Fix some buggy test data that passed only due to problems with DES
support in the product.
In psa_hash_start, psa_mac_start and psa_cipher_setup, return
PSA_ERROR_INVALID_ARGUMENT rather than PSA_ERROR_NOT_SUPPORTED when
the algorithm parameter is not the right category.
When psa_mac_start(), psa_encrypt_setup() or psa_cipher_setup()
failed, depending on when the failure happened, it was possible that
psa_mac_abort() or psa_cipher_abort() would crash because it would try
to call a free() function uninitialized data in the operation
structure. Refactor the functions so that they initialize the
operation structure before doing anything else.
Add non-regression tests and a few more positive and negative unit
tests for psa_mac_start() and psa_cipher_setup() (the latter via
psa_encrypt_setip()).
In some configurations (like config-mini-tls1_1.h), size is unused. This
leads to failures when building with CMake Asan, because that build
doesn't use "-Wno-unused-value".
Fixes: e01822299624 ("New function mbedtls_rsa_get_bitlen")
In psa_export_key, ensure that each byte of the output buffer either
contains its original value, is zero, or is part of the actual output.
Specifically, don't risk having partial output on error, and don't
leave extra data at the end of the buffer when exporting an asymmetric
key.
Test that exporting to a previously zeroed buffer leaves the buffer
zeroed outside the actual output if any.
Exporting an asymmetric key only worked if the target buffer had
exactly the right size, because psa_export_key uses
mbedtls_pk_write_key_der or mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der and these
functions write to the end of the buffer, which psa_export_key did not
correct for. Fix this by moving the data to the beginning of the
buffer if necessary.
Add non-regression tests.

This commit only moves test functions and test cases around. It does
not modify, add or remove tests.
psa_import_key must check that the imported key data matches the
expected key type. Implement the missing check for EC keys that the
curve is the expected one.
Instead of rolling our own list of elliptic curve identifiers, use one
from somewhere. Pick TLS because it's the right size (16 bits) and
it's as good as any.
Get rid of many redundant casts. In particular, it is not useful to
cast uint32_t values to size_t before performing arithmetic or
comparisons on them.
Rewrap a number of function calls, many of which now have narrower
arguments thanks to the removed casts. When a function call doesn't
fit on a single line, avoid grouping unrelated parameters together,
but do try to group a buffer pointer and the associated size.
Define more auxiliary variables xxx of a particular integer
type (psa_algorithm_t, psa_key_usage_t, etc.) corresponding to a test
function xxx_arg which has the type int. This avoids the need to cast
xxx_arg to an unsigned type sometimes in the code.
Avoid lines longer than 80 columns.
Remove some redundant parentheses, e.g. change
if( ( a == b ) && ( c == d ) )
to
if( a == b && c == d )
which makes lines less long and makes the remaining parentheses more
relevant.
Add missing parentheses around return statements.
There should be no semantic change in this commit.

Always adding things at the end tends to create merge conflicts.
Adding in the middle in this way makes the order more logical in
addition to avoiding conflicts.
* PKCS#7 padding always adds at least one byte of padding, so test
data with plaintext length = ciphertext length could not have been
correct.
* CTR has plaintext length = ciphertext length, so test data with
differing lengths could not have been correct.

Fix the compile-time dependencies on RSA/ECP handling in

Define psa_key_type_t and a first stab at a few values.
New functions psa_import_key, psa_export_key, psa_destroy_key,
psa_get_key_information. Implement them for raw data and RSA.
Under the hood, create an in-memory, fixed-size keystore with room
for MBEDTLS_PSA_KEY_SLOT_COUNT - 1 keys.
Add a new function mbedtls_rsa_get_bitlen which returns the RSA key
size, i.e. the bit size of the modulus. In the pk module, call
mbedtls_rsa_get_bitlen instead of mbedtls_rsa_get_len, which gave the
wrong result for key sizes that are not a multiple of 8.
This commit adds one non-regression test in the pk suite. More tests
are needed for RSA key sizes that are a multiple of 8.
This commit does not address RSA alternative implementations, which
only provide an interface that return the modulus size in bytes.

Implement psa_crypto_init function which sets up a RNG.
Add a mbedtls_psa_crypto_free function which deinitializes the
library.
Define a first batch of error codes.
previously a single function was used for most test cases (ctr_drbg_validate) making it harder to understand what the exact scenario is as a result it was split into easier to understand functions.
the testing functions were re-factored so that the common code was extracted to a single static function (removing the need for unclear goto statements).
As part of the re-factor the test functions now use data_t for parameters (support for this was introduced in previous rebase),
the change is designed to make configuring 128bit keys for ctr_drbg more similar to other configuration options. Tests have been updated accordingly.
also clarified test naming.
Unify the three existing validation functions (with prediction
resistance, with manual reseeding between generations, and with no
reseeding) into a single function that supports these three scenarios
plus a fourth one (reseed before the first generation).
The four supported scenarios cover the three scenarios from the
current CAVP test vectors (no reseed, reseed before generating,
prediction resistance) plus a fourth scenario used by the existing
test vectors (reseed after generating).
(cherry picked from commit cee9bedee6bc1a8e2b22fa8a31647b62ebb8a0a4)
The ctr_drbg_validate_xxx test functions had hard-coded sizes for the
entropy and the output size. Generalize the sizes.
Keep track of the current entropy size.
Unhexify the expected output and compare with the actual output,
rather than hexifying the actual output and comparing the hex.
Function test_snprintf() is called by run_test_snprintf() with constant test
data. It gets inlined and is subjected to snprintf format truncation checks
introduced by -Wformat-truncation in gcc-7. -Wformat-truncation is turned
On by -Wall and other similar options. It results in error with -Werror.
-Wformat-truncation makes tests performed by run_test_snprintf() redundant
on gcc. But they are still relevant for other compilers. This commit prevents
inlining of test_snprintf() to avoid gcc compile time checks.
Test suite header code was not gaurded with test suite dependency.
But some test suites have additional code in the headers section.
Variables in that section become unused if suite functions are
gaurded. Hence gaurded the headers section.
But this changed cuased missing types in get_expression() function
that was originally accessing types defined through suite headers.
Hence had to gaurd expressions code as well.
Gaurding expressions does not allow parsing the parameters when
some types or hash defs are gaurded. Hence added function
check_test() to check if test is allowed or not before parsing the
parameters.
- Separate string and hex parameter as unhexify is moved out of the function. It's input should only be hex.
- Fix test mbedtls_ccm_encrypt_and_tag that grows input message buffer with tag
- Add missing expected length parameter in ECP TLS tests
- Add deleted TEST_ASSERT and mbedtls calls that got removed in script based code generation
Address review comments:
1. add `mbedtls_cipher_init()` after freeing context, in test code
2. style comments
3. set `ctx->iv_size = 0` in case `IV == NULL && iv_len == 0`

mbedtls_aes_crypt_xts() currently takes a `bits_length` parameter, unlike
the other block modes. Change the parameter to accept a bytes length
instead, as the `bits_length` parameter is not actually ever used in the
current implementation.
Add a new context structure for XTS. Adjust the API for XTS to use the new
context structure, including tests suites and the benchmark program. Update
Doxgen documentation accordingly.
AES-XEX is a building block for other cryptographic standards and not yet a
standard in and of itself. We'll just provide the standardized AES-XTS
algorithm, and not AES-XEX. The AES-XTS algorithm and interface provided
can be used to perform the AES-XEX algorithm when the length of the input
is a multiple of the AES block size.
XTS mode is fully known as "xor-encrypt-xor with ciphertext-stealing".
This is the generalization of the XEX mode.
This implementation is limited to an 8-bits (1 byte) boundary, which
doesn't seem to be what was thought considering some test vectors [1].
This commit comes with tests, extracted from [1], and benchmarks.
Although, benchmarks aren't really nice here, as they work with a buffer
of a multiple of 16 bytes, which isn't a challenge for XTS compared to
XEX.
[1] http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/STM/cavp/documents/aes/XTSTestVectors.zip
The test cases come from the XTS test vectors given by the CAVP initiative
from NIST (see [1]).
As mentioned in a previous commit, XEX is a simpler case of XTS.
Therefore, to construct the test_suite_aes.xex.data file, extraction of
the XEX-possible cases has been done on the given test vectors.
All of the extracted test vectors pass the tests on a Linux x86_64 machine.
[1] http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/STM/cavp/documents/aes/XTSTestVectors.zip
The way we do negative tests only works if the initial test was positive.
This was not immediately apparent with the set of test data at the time the
code for negative testing was introduced, but it became apparent with the
addition of the "0 private value" / "overlong private value" tests that
happened in development while this branch was developed.

Allowing DECRYPT with crypt_and_tag is a risk as people might fail to check

Values were chosen to leave 3 free slots at the end of the NET odd range.
This module used (len, pointer) while (pointer, len) is more common in the
rest of the library, in particular it's what's used in the CMAC API that is
very comparable to Poly1305, so switch to (pointer, len) for consistency.
In addition to making the APIs of the various AEAD modules more consistent
with each other, it's useful to have an auth_decrypt() function so that we can
safely check the tag ourselves, as the user might otherwise do it in an
insecure way (or even forget to do it altogether).
While the old name is explicit and aligned with the RFC, it's also very long,
so with the mbedtls_ prefix prepended we get a 31-char prefix to each
identifier, which quickly conflicts with our 80-column policy.
The new name is shorter, it's what a lot of people use when speaking about
that construction anyway, and hopefully should not introduce confusion at
it seems unlikely that variants other than 20/1305 be standardised in the
foreseeable future.
This implementation is based off the description in RFC 7539.
The ChaCha20 code is also updated to provide a means of generating
keystream blocks with arbitrary counter values. This is used to
generated the one-time Poly1305 key in the AEAD construction.

The specification requires that numbers are the raw entropy (except for odd/

be used.

Because of the two optional fields, there are 4 possible variants that need to
be parsed: no optional fields, only parameters, only public key, and both
optional fields. Previously mbedTLS was unable to parse keys with "only
parameters". Also, only "only public key" was tested. There was a test for "no
optional fields", but it was labelled incorrectly as SEC.1 and not run because
of a great renaming mixup.
The 'critical' boolean can be set to false in two ways:
- by leaving it implicit (test data generated by openssl)
- by explicitly setting it to false (generated by hand)
This covers all lines added in the previous commit. Coverage was tested using:

(cd tests && ./test_suite_x509parse)
make lcov
firefox Coverage/index.html # then visual check
Test data was generated by taking a copy of tests/data_files/crl-idp.pem,
encoding it as hex, and then manually changing the values of some bytes to
achieve the desired errors, using https://lapo.it/asn1js/ for help in locating
the desired bytes.

Some unit tests for pbkdf2_hmac() have results longer than
99bytes when represented in hexadecimal form.
For this reason extend the result array to accommodate
longer strings.
At the same time make memset() parametric to avoid
bugs in the future.
Signed-off-by: Antonio Quartulli <antonio@openvpn.net>
Test vectors for SHA224,256,384 and 512 have been
generated using Python's hashlib module by the
following oneliner:
import binascii, hashlib
binascii.hexlify(hashlib.pbkdf2_hmac(ALGO, binascii.unhexlify('PASSWORD'), binascii.unhexlify('SALT'), ITER, KEYLEN)))
where ALGO was 'sha224', 'sha256', 'sha384' and 'sha512'
respectively.
Values for PASSWORD, SALT, ITER and KEYLEN were copied from the
existent test vectors for SHA1.
For SHA256 we also have two test vectors coming from RFC7914 Sec 11.
Signed-off-by: Antonio Quartulli <antonio@openvpn.net>
Currently only SHA1 is supported as PRF algorithm for PBKDF2
(PKCS#5 v2.0).
This means that keys encrypted and authenticated using
another algorithm of the SHA family cannot be decrypted.
This deficiency has become particularly incumbent now that
PKIs created with OpenSSL1.1 are encrypting keys using
hmacSHA256 by default (OpenSSL1.0 used PKCS#5 v1.0 by default
and even if v2 was forced, it would still use hmacSHA1).
Enable support for all the digest algorithms of the SHA
family for PKCS#5 v2.0.

1. Style issues fixes - remove redundant spacing.
2. Remove depency of `MBEDTLS_RSA_C` in `pk_parse_public_keyfile_rsa()`
tests, as the function itself is dependent on it.
This change fixes a problem in the tests pk_rsa_alt() and
pk_rsa_overflow() from test_suite_pk.function that would cause a
segmentation fault. The problem is that these tests are only designed
to run in computers where the SIZE_MAX > UINT_MAX.
Change function in tests named mbedtls_entropy_func to
mbedtls_test_entropy_func to avoid getting error from the linker when
calling the mbedtls_entropy_func elsewhere.
The _ext suffix suggests "new arguments", but the new functions have
the same arguments. Use _ret instead, to convey that the difference is
that the new functions return a value.
Conflict resolution:
* ChangeLog: put the new entries in their rightful place.
* library/x509write_crt.c: the change in development was whitespace
only, so use the one from the iotssl-1251 feature branch.
1) `mbedtls_rsa_import_raw` used an uninitialized return
value when it was called without any input parameters.
While not sensible, this is allowed and should be a
succeeding no-op.
2) The MPI test for prime generation missed a return value
check for a call to `mbedtls_mpi_shift_r`. This is neither
critical nor new but should be fixed.
3) Both the RSA keygeneration example program and the
RSA test suites contained code initializing an RSA context
after a potentially failing call to CTR DRBG initialization,
leaving the corresponding RSA context free call in the
cleanup section of the respective function orphaned.
While this defect existed before, Coverity picked up on
it again because of newly introduced MPI's that were
also wrongly initialized only after the call to CTR DRBG
init. The commit fixes both the old and the new issue
by moving the initializtion of both the RSA context and
all MPI's prior to the first potentially failing call.

During the work on the RSA change the issue was brought up,
and a fix was provided on development, that some RSA tests
use CTR DRBG and depend on the presence of a strong entropy
source to succeed. The RSA work introduced more tests using
CTR DRBG, and the dependency needs to be added for them, too.

The selftest function sometimes fails on a heavily loaded
machine (such as a typical continuous integration system). Because of
the all-in-one nature of the test and because the exact load pattern
can be hard to reproduce, it is difficult to diagnose failures of CI
runs with selftest. The new tests are more separated and I strove to
point out potential failure modes in comments.
* mbedtls_timing_hardclock: not tested. This function gives so few
guarantees that there isn't much to test, and it is hard to test
reliably because clock cycles don't easily relate to time in any
remotely portable way. This function isn't used in the library
anyway, it's only there for benchmark programs.
* mbedtls_timing_get_timer: tested by setting a timer and verifying
that it reaches its target, and by verifying that a timer started
later than another always has a smaller elapsed time.
* mbedtls_set_alarm: tested by setting an alarm, busy-waiting for it
and measuring the elapsed time with a timer.
* mbedtls_timing_set_delay, mbedtls_timing_get_delay: tested by
setting a delay object and watching it go through its two delay
values, using a timer to check that the delays are passed at the
expected time.
The tests pass under light to moderate load, but some of them can be
defeated with sufficiently heavy load. This is unavoidable since the
test process to be effectively suspended for any length of time,
making us think that a timer has gone on for too long.

Deprecate usage of RSA primitives with wrong key type
For a key of size 8N+1, check that the first byte after applying the
public key operation is 0 (it could have been 1 instead). The code was
incorrectly doing a no-op check instead, which led to invalid
signatures being accepted. Not a security flaw, since you would need the
private key to craft such an invalid signature, but a bug nonetheless.
The check introduced by the previous security fix was off by one. It
fixed the buffer overflow but was not compliant with the definition of
PSS which technically led to accepting some invalid signatures (but
not signatures made without the private key).
Fix buffer overflow in RSA-PSS signature verification when the hash is
too large for the key size. Found by Seth Terashima, Qualcomm.
Added a non-regression test and a positive test with the smallest
permitted key size for a SHA-512 hash.
1) use `pk_get_rsapubkey` instead of reimplementing the parsing
2) rename the key files, according to their type and key size
3) comment in the data_files/Makefile hoe the keys were generated
4) Fix issue of failure parsing pkcs#1 DER format parsing, missed in previous commit
The test case parses an RSA private key with N=P=Q=D=E=1 and expects a failure from the PK layer. With the weakened
semantics of `mbedtls_rsa_complete`, the latter won't throw an error on that key in case if MBEDTLS_RSA_NO_CRT is
set. This commit modifies the test case to use N=2 which is rejected by `mbedtls_rsa_complete` regardless of whether
MBEDTLS_RSA_NO_CRT is set or not.
The number of loop iterations per candidate in `mbedtls_deduce_primes` was off
by one. This commit corrects this and removes a toy non-example from the RSA
test suite, as it seems difficult to have the function fail on small values of N
even if D,E are corrupted.
This commit splits off the RSA helper functions into separate headers and
compilation units to have a clearer separation of the public RSA interface,
intended to be used by end-users, and the helper functions which are publicly
provided only for the benefit of designers of alternative RSA implementations.
The tests now accept two result parameters, one for the expected result of the
completion call, and one for the expected result of the subsequent sanity
check.
The change modifies the template code in tests/suites/helpers.function
and tests/suites/main.function so that error messages are printed to
stdout instead of being discarded. This makes errors visible regardless
of the --verbose flag being passed or not to the test suite programs.

Add a test case calling ssl_set_hostname twice to test_suite_ssl.
When run in CMake build mode ASan, this catches the current leak,
but will hopefully be fine with the new version.
As the new PKCS v1.5 verification function opaquely compares an expected encoding to the given one, it cannot
distinguish multiple reasons of failure anymore and instead always returns MBEDTLS_ERR_RSA_VERIFY_FAILED. This
necessitates some modifications to the expected return values of some tests verifying signatures with bad padding.
This commit adds some tests to the RSA test suite verifying that RSA PKCS-v15 signatures with non-reduced length
encodings are refuted. Details are provided via comments in the test suite data file.

This commit adds a flag to the RSA import/export tests indicating whether it is
expected that a full RSA keypair can be set up from the provided parameters.
Further, the tests of `mbedtls_rsa_import` and `mbedtls_rsa_import_raw` are
expanded to perform key checks and an example encryption-decryption.
A bug in the dhm_check_range() function makes it pass even when the
parameters are not in the range. This commit adds tests for signalling
this problem as well as a couple of other negative tests.
This commit renames the test-only flag MBEDTLS_ENTROPY_HAVE_STRONG to ENTROPY_HAVE_STRONG to make it more transparent
that it's an internal flag, and also to content the testscript tests/scripts/check-names.pl which previously complained
about the macro occurring in a comment in `entropy.c` without being defined in a library file.
Previously, 2048-bit and 4096-bit RSA key files had their bitsize indicated in their filename, while the original
1024-bit keys hadn't. This commit unifies the naming scheme by always indicating the bitsize in the filename.
For uniformity, this commit adds tests for DER encoded, SHA1-2DES and SHA1-RC4-128-encrypted RSA keys; for SHA1-3DES encrypted keys, these were already present.

This commit adds test for the new library function mbedtls_rsa_check_params for
checking a set of RSA core parameters. There are some toy example tests with
small numbers that can be verified by hand, as well as tests with real world
numbers. Complete, partial and corrupted data are tested, as well the check for
primality exactly if a PRNG is provided.
This commit adds tests for the new library function mbedtls_rsa_export_raw.
Each test case performs the following steps:
- Parse and convert a set of hex-string decoded core RSA parameters into big
endian byte arrays.
- Use these to initialize an RSA context
- Export core RSA parameters as byte arrays again afterwards
- Compare byte strings.
Each test split is performed twice, once with successive and once with
simultaneous exporting.
This commit adds tests for the new library function mbedtls_rsa_export. Each
test case performs the following steps:
- Parse and convert a set of hex-string decoded core RSA parameters into MPI's.
- Use these to initialize an RSA context
- Export core RSA parameters as MPI's again afterwards
- Compare initial MPI's to exported ones.
In the private key case, all core parameters are exported and sanity-checked,
regardless of whether they were also used during setup.
Each test split is performed twice, once with successive and once with
simultaneous exporting.
This commit adds numerous tests for the new library functions mbedtls_rsa_import
and mbedtls_rsa_import_raw in conjunction with mbedtls_rsa_complete for
importing and completing core sets of core RSA parameters (N,P,Q,D,E) into an
RSA context, with the importing accepting either MPI's or raw big endian
buffers.
Each test is determined by the following parameters:
1) Set of parameters provided
We're testing full sets (N,P,Q,D,E), partial sets (N,-,-,D,E) and (N,P,Q,-,E)
that are sufficient to generate missing parameters, and the partial and
insufficient set (N, -, Q, -, E).
2) Simultaenous or successive importing
The functions rsa_import and rsa_import_raw accept importing parameters at
once or one after another. We test both.
3) Sanity of parameters
This commit adds test for the new library function mbedtls_rsa_deduce_moduli for
deducing the prime factors (P,Q) of an RSA modulus N from knowledge of a
pair (D,E) of public and private exponent:
- Two toy examples that can be checked by hand, one fine and with bad parameters.
- Two real world examples, one fine and one with bad parameters.
This commit adds tests for the new library function mbedtls_rsa_deduce_private
for deducing the private RSA exponent D from the public exponent E and the
factorization (P,Q) of the RSA modulus:
- Two toy examples with small numbers that can be checked by hand, one
working fine and another failing due to bad parameters.
- Two real world examples, one fine and one with bad parameters.
The fact that you needed to pass a pointer to mbedtls_ecdsa_restart_ctx (or
that you needed to know the key type of the PK context) was a breach of
abstraction.
Change the API (and callers) now, and the implementation will be changed in
the next commit.
For selection of test cases, see comments added in the commit.
It makes the most sense to test with chains using ECC only, so for the chain
of length 2 we use server10 -> int-ca3 -> int-ca2 and trust int-ca2 directly.
Note: server10.crt was created by copying server10_int3_int-ca2.crt and
manually truncating it to remove the intermediates. That base can now be used
to create derived certs (without or with a chain) in a programmatic way.
This is mainly for the benefit of SSL modules, which only supports restart in
a limited number of cases. In the other cases (ECDHE_PSK) it would currently
return ERR_ECP_IN_PROGRESS and the user would thus call ssl_handshake() again,
but the SSL code wouldn't handle state properly and things would go wrong in
possibly unexpected ways. This is undesirable, so it should be possible for
the SSL module to choose if ECDHE should behave the old or the new way.
Not that it also brings ECDHE more in line with the other modules which
already have that choice available (by passing a NULL or valid restart
context).
Test relies on deterministic signature as this uses plain sig internally, so
if deterministic works, then so does non-deterministic, while the reciprocal
is false. (Also, deterministic is enabled by default in config.h.)
Test case is taken from a RFC 6979 test vector, just manually converting (r,s)
to the encoded signature.
This was intended to detect aborted operations, but now that case is handled
by the caller freeing the restart context.
Also, as the internal sub-context is managed by the callee, no need for the
caller to free/reset the restart context between successful calls.
Following discussion in the team, it was deemed preferable for the restart
context to be explicitly managed by the caller.
This commits in the first in a series moving in that directly: it starts by
only changing the public API, while still internally using the old design.
Future commits in that series will change to the new design internally.
The test function was simplified as it no longer makes sense to test for some
memory management errors since that responsibility shifted to the caller.
In case of argument change, freeing everything is not the most efficient
(wastes one free()+calloc()) but makes the code simpler, which is probably
more important here
We'll need to store MPIs and other things that allocate memory in this
context, so we need a place to free it. We can't rely on doing it before
returning from ecp_mul() as we might return MBEDTLS_ERR_ECP_IN_PROGRESS (thus
preserving the context) and never be called again (for example, TLS handshake
aborted for another reason). So, ecp_group_free() looks like a good place to
do this, if the restart context is part of struct ecp_group.
This means it's not possible to use the same ecp_group structure in different
threads concurrently, but:
- that's already the case (and documented) for other reasons
- this feature is precisely intended for environments that lack threading
An alternative option would be for the caller to have to allocate/free the
restart context and pass it explicitly, but this means creating new functions
that take a context argument, and putting a burden on the user.
Our current behaviour is a bit inconsistent here:
- when the bad signature is made by a trusted CA, we stop here and don't
include the trusted CA in the chain (don't call vrfy on it)
- otherwise, we just add NOT_TRUSTED to the flags but keep building the chain
and call vrfy on the upper certs
This ensures that the callback can actually clear that flag, and that it is
seen by the callback at the right level. This flag is not set at the same
place than others, and this difference will get bigger in the upcoming
refactor, so let's ensure we don't break anything here.
When a trusted CA is rolling its root keys, it could happen that for some
users the list of trusted roots contains two versions of the same CA with the
same name but different keys. Currently this is supported but wasn't tested.
Note: the intermediate file test-ca-alt.csr is commited on purpose, as not
commiting intermediate files causes make to regenerate files that we don't
want it to touch.
As we accept EE certs that are explicitly trusted (in the list of trusted
roots) and usually look for parent by subject, and in the future we might want
to avoid checking the self-signature on trusted certs, there could a risk that we
incorrectly accept a cert that looks like a trusted root except it doesn't
have the same key. This test ensures this will never happen.
The tests cover chains of length 0, 1 and 2, with one error, located at any of
the available levels in the chain. This exercises all three call sites of
f_vrfy (two in verify_top, one in verify_child). Chains of greater length
would not cover any new code path or behaviour that I can see.
So far there was no test ensuring that the flags passed to the vrfy callback
are correct (ie the flags for the current certificate, not including those of
the parent).
Actual tests case making use of that test function will be added in the next
commit.
We have code to skip them but didn't have explicit tests ensuring they are
(the corresponding branch was never taken).
While at it, remove extra copy of the chain in server10*.crt, which was
duplicated for no reason.
This shows inconsistencies in how flags are handled when callback fails:
- sometimes the flags set by the callback are transmitted, sometimes not
- when the cert if not trusted, sometimes BADCERT_NOT_TRUSTED is set,
sometimes not
This adds coverage for 9 lines and 9 branches. Now all lines related to
callback failure are covered.
Now all checks related to profile are covered in:
- verify_with_profile()
- verify_child()
- verify_top()
(that's 10 lines that were previously not covered)
Leaving aside profile enforcement in CRLs for now, as the focus is on
preparing to refactor cert verification.
Previously flags was left to whatever value it had before. It's cleaner to
make sure it has a definite value, and all bits set looks like the safest way
for when it went very wrong.
The X509 test suite assumes that MBEDTLS_X509_MAX_INTERMEDIATE_CA is below the
hardcoded threshold 20 used in the long certificate chain generating script
tests/data_files/dir-max/long.sh. This commit adds a compile-time check for
that.
The RSA key generation test needs strong entropy to succeed. This commit captures the presence of a strong entropy
source in a preprocessor flag and only runs the key generation test if that flag is set.
The function `mbedtls_rsa_gen_key` from `test_suite_rsa.function` initialized a stack allocated RSA context only after
seeding the CTR DRBG. If the latter operation failed, the cleanup code tried to free the uninitialized RSA context,
potentially resulting in a segmentation fault. Fixes one aspect of #1023.
If we didn't walk the whole chain, then there may be any kind of errors in the
part of the chain we didn't check, so setting all flags looks like the safe
thing to do.
Inspired by test code provided by Nicholas Wilson in PR #351.
The test will fail if someone sets MAX_INTERMEDIATE_CA to a value larger than
18 (default is 8), which is hopefully unlikely and can easily be fixed by
running long.sh again with a larger value if it ever happens.
Current behaviour is suboptimal as flags are not set, but currently the goal
is only to document/test existing behaviour.
By default, keep allowing SHA-1 in key exchange signatures. Disabling
it causes compatibility issues, especially with clients that use
TLS1.2 but don't send the signature_algorithms extension.
SHA-1 is forbidden in certificates by default, since it's vulnerable
to offline collision-based attacks.
There is now one test case to validate that SHA-1 is rejected in
certificates by default, and one test case to validate that SHA-1 is
supported if MBEDTLS_TLS_DEFAULT_ALLOW_SHA1 is #defined.
SHA-1 is now disabled by default in the X.509 layer. Explicitly enable
it in our tests for now. Updating all the test data to SHA-256 should
be done over time.
The ECJPAKE test suite uses a size zero array for the empty password
used in the tests, which is not valid C. This commit fixes this.
This originally showed up as a compilation failure on Visual Studio
2015, documented in IOTSSL-1242, but can also be observed with GCC
when using the -Wpedantic compilation option.
The test case was generated by modifying our signature code so that it
produces a 7-byte long padding (which also means garbage at the end, so it is
essential in to check that the error that is detected first is indeed the
padding rather than the final length check).
The modular inversion function hangs when provided with the modulus 1. This commit refuses this modulus with a BAD_INPUT error code. It also adds a test for this case.
Fix a buffer overflow when writting a string representation of an MPI
number to a buffer in hexadecimal. The problem occurs because hex
digits are written in pairs and this is not accounted for in the
calculation of the required buffer size when the number of digits is
odd.
The first three test cases from test_suites_pkparse.data failed because
the key file they read requires DES to be read. However, MBEDTLS_DES_C
was missing from the dependency list.
This curve has special arithmetic on 64 bit platforms and an untested
path lead to trying to free a buffer on the stack.
For the sake of completeness, a test case for a point with non-affine
coordinates has been added as well.
Fixes a regression introduced by an earlier commit that modified
x509_crt_verify_top() to ensure that valid certificates that are after past or
future valid in the chain are processed. However the change introduced a change
in behaviour that caused the verification flags MBEDTLS_X509_BADCERT_EXPIRED and
MBEDTLS_BADCERT_FUTURE to always be set whenever there is a failure in the
verification regardless of the cause.
The fix maintains both behaviours:
* Ensure that valid certificates after future and past are verified
* Ensure that the correct verification flags are set.
Modifies the function mbedtls_x509_crl_parse() to ensure that a CRL in PEM
format with trailing characters after the footer does not result in the
execution of an infinite loop.
Fix potential integer overflows in the following functions:
* mbedtls_md2_update() to be bypassed and cause
* mbedtls_cipher_update()
* mbedtls_ctr_drbg_reseed()
This overflows would mainly be exploitable in 32-bit systems and could
cause buffer bound checks to be bypassed.
The tests load certificate chains from files. The CA chains contain a
past or future certificate and an invalid certificate. The test then
checks that the flags set are MBEDTLS_X509_BADCERT_EXPIRED or
MBEDTLS_X509_BADCERT_FUTURE.

Changes to allow the entropy tests to work for configurations without an
entropy seed file (MBEDTLS_ENTROPY_NV_SEED), and with no entropy sources
configured (MBEDTLS_TEST_NULL_ENTROPY).
Instead of polling the hardware entropy source a single time and
comparing the output with itself, the source is polled at least twice
and make sure that the separate outputs are different.
The self test is a quick way to check at startup whether the entropy
sources are functioning correctly. The self test only polls 8 bytes
from the default entropy source and performs the following checks:
- The bytes are not all 0x00 or 0xFF.
- The hardware does not return an error when polled.
- The entropy does not provide data in a patter. Only check pattern
at byte, word and long word sizes.
