Some users' machines have improperly configured audio devices, which can lead to games locking up on boot.
This lovely behaviour forced Maide to work on a {{< gh-hovercard "11359" "test to run early in the boot process" >}} to see which audio backend can properly start the audio device. If the device fails to initialise with both cubeb and SDL, the null backend is selected and the game continues to work, just without any audio output.
