Previously it was disabled as too experimental, which no longer holds. Also,
this option introduces new APIs, so it's not only about an internal
alternative (as the comment in config.pl used to state) - people who request a
full config should get all of the available APIs.
Adapt all.sh: now all builds with full config will also test this option, and
builds with the default config will test without it. Just to be sure, let's
have a build with full config minus this option.
Update documentation of MBEDTLS_USE_PSA_CRYPTO to reflect the status of the
new APIs it enables in Mbed TLS and why they're still opt-in.
Also enable it in scripts/config.pl full, as well as two storage options that
were only blacklisted from full config because they depended on
MBEDTLS_PSA_CRYPTO_C.
Don't use "safe buffer size", because this it's somewhat misleading to

introduced to avoid confusion with getting a key from a generator,
which is key derivation, but we no longer use the generator
terminology so this reason no longer applies.

Move DSA-related key types and algorithms to the
implementation-specific header file. Not that we actually implement
DSA, but with domain parameters, we should be able to.
Parametrize finite-field Diffie-Hellman key types with a DH group

The documentation for some new structures and members was only a C style
comment and wasn't picked up by doxygen. This commit adds the missing

Define a range of key identifiers for use by the application
(0..2^30-1), a range for use by implementations (2^30..2^31), and a
range that is reserved for future use (2^31..2^32-1).
Change the scope of key identifiers to be global, rather than
per lifetime. As a result, you now need to specify the lifetime of a
key only when creating it.
Declare algorithms for ChaCha20 and ChaCha20-Poly1305, and a
corresponding (common) key type.
Don't declare Poly1305 as a separate algorithm because it's a one-time
authenticator, not a MAC, so the API isn't suitable for it (no way to
use a nonce).
New macros PSA_AEAD_UPDATE_OUTPUT_SIZE, PSA_AEAD_FINISH_OUTPUT_SIZE
and PSA_AEAD_VERIFY_OUTPUT_SIZE to determine the output buffer sizes
for psa_aead_update(), psa_aead_finish() and psa_aead_verify().
Like psa_aead_finish(), psa_aead_verify() needs to produce output from
the last partial block of input if psa_aead_update() cannot produce
output byte by byte.
In psa_import_key and psa_copy_key, some information comes from the
key data (input buffer or source key) rather than from the attributes:
key size for import, key size and type and domain parameters for copy.
If an unused attribute is nonzero in the attribute structure, check
that it matches the correct value. This protects against application
errors.

There was a guarantee that psa_get_key_attributes() does not require a
subsequent psa_reset_key_attributes() to free resources as long as the
key was created with attributes having this property. This requirement
was hard to pin down because if a key is created with default
parameters, there are cases where it is difficult to ensure that the
domain parameters will be reported without allocating memory. So
remove this guarantee. Now the only case psa_reset_key_attributes() is
not required is if the attribute structure has only been modified with
certain specific setters.
Read extra data from the domain parameters in the attribute structure
instead of taking an argument on the function call.
Implement this for RSA key generation, where the public exponent can
be set as a domain parameter.
Add tests that generate RSA keys with various public exponents.
Change psa_get_domain_parameters() and psa_set_domain_parameters() to
access a psa_key_attributes_t structure rather than a key handle.
In psa_get_key_attributes(), treat the RSA public exponent as a domain
parameter and read it out. This is in preparation for removing the
`extra` parameter of psa_generate_key() and setting the RSA public
exponent for key generation via domain parameters.
In this commit, the default public exponent 65537 is not treated
specially, which allows us to verify that test code that should be
calling psa_reset_key_attributes() after retrieving the attributes of
an RSA key is doing so properly (if it wasn't, there would be a memory
leak), even if the test data happens to use an RSA key with the
default public exponent.
Instead of passing a separate parameter for the key size to
psa_generate_key and psa_generator_import_key, set it through the
attributes, like the key type and other metadata.
This commit adds tests exercising mutually inverse pairs of
record encryption and decryption transformations for the various
transformation types allowed in TLS: Stream, CBC, and AEAD.
The hash contexts `ssl_transform->md_ctx_{enc/dec}` are not used if
only AEAD ciphersuites are enabled. This commit removes them from the
`ssl_transform` struct in this case, saving a few bytes.
Analogous to the previous commit, but concerning the record decryption
routine `ssl_decrypt_buf`.
An important change regards the checking of CBC padding:
Prior to this commit, the CBC padding check always read 256 bytes at
the end of the internal record buffer, almost always going past the
boundaries of the record under consideration. In order to stay within
the bounds of the given record, this commit changes this behavior by
always reading the last min(256, plaintext_len) bytes of the record
plaintext buffer and taking into consideration the last `padlen` of
these for the padding check. With this change, the memory access
pattern and runtime of the padding check is entirely determined by
the size of the encrypted record, in particular not giving away
any information on the validity of the padding.

The previous version of the record encryption function
`ssl_encrypt_buf` takes the entire SSL context as an argument,
while intuitively, it should only depend on the current security
parameters and the record buffer.
Analyzing the exact dependencies, it turned out that in addition
to the currently active `ssl_transform` instance and the record
information, the encryption function needs access to
- the negotiated protocol version, and
- the status of the encrypt-then-MAC extension.
This commit moves these two fields into `ssl_transform` and
changes the signature of `ssl_encrypt_buf` to only use an instance
of `ssl_transform` and an instance of the new `ssl_record` type.
The `ssl_context` instance is *solely* kept for the debugging macros
which need an SSL context instance.
The benefit of the change is twofold:
1) It avoids the need of the MPS to deal with instances of
`ssl_context`. The MPS should only work with records and
opaque security parameters, which is what the change in
this commit makes progress towards.
2) It significantly eases testing of the encryption function:
independent of any SSL context, the encryption function can
be passed some record buffer to encrypt alongside some arbitrary
choice of parameters, and e.g. be checked to not overflow the
provided memory.
This commit adds a structure `mbedtls_record` whose instances
represent (D)TLS records. This structure will be used in the
subsequent adaptions of the record encryption and decryption
routines `ssl_decrypt_buf` and `ssl_encrypt_buf`, which currently
take the entire SSL context as input, but should only use the
record to be acted on as well as the record transformation to use.
The macro constant `MBEDTLS_SSL_MAC_ADD` defined in `ssl_internal.h`
defines an upper bound for the amount of space needed for the record
authentication tag. Its definition distinguishes between the
presence of an ARC4 or CBC ciphersuite suite, in which case the maximum
size of an enabled SHA digest is used; otherwise, `MBEDTLS_SSL_MAC_ADD`
is set to 16 to accomodate AEAD authentication tags.
This assignment has a flaw in the situation where confidentiality is
not needed and the NULL cipher is in use. In this case, the
authentication tag also uses a SHA digest, but the definition of
`MBEDTLS_SSL_MAC_ADD` doesn't guarantee enough space.
The present commit fixes this by distinguishing between the presence
of *some* ciphersuite using a MAC, including those using a NULL cipher.
For that, the previously internal macro `SSL_SOME_MODES_USE_MAC` from
`ssl_tls.c` is renamed and moved to the public macro
`MBEDTLS_SOME_MODES_USE_MAC` defined in `ssl_internal.h`.
Prior to this commit, the security parameter struct `ssl_transform`
contained a `ciphersuite_info` field pointing to the information
structure for the negotiated ciphersuite. However, the only
information extracted from that structure that was used in the core
encryption and decryption functions `ssl_encrypt_buf`/`ssl_decrypt_buf`
was the authentication tag length in case of an AEAD cipher.
The present commit removes the `ciphersuite_info` field from the
`ssl_transform` structure and adds an explicit `taglen` field
for AEAD authentication tag length.
This is in accordance with the principle that the `ssl_transform`
structure should contain the raw parameters needed for the record
encryption and decryption functions to work, but not the higher-level
information that gave rise to them. For example, the `ssl_transform`
structure implicitly contains the encryption/decryption keys within
their cipher contexts, but it doesn't contain the SSL master or
premaster secrets. Likewise, it contains an explicit `maclen`, while
the status of the 'Truncated HMAC' extension -- which determines the
value of `maclen` when the `ssl_transform` structure is created in
`ssl_derive_keys` -- is not contained in `ssl_transform`.
The `ciphersuite_info` pointer was used in other places outside
the encryption/decryption functions during the handshake, and for
these functions to work, this commit adds a `ciphersuite_info` pointer
field to the handshake-local `ssl_handshake_params` structure.
The `ssl_transform` security parameter structure contains opaque
cipher contexts for use by the record encryption/decryption functions
`ssl_decrypt_buf`/`ssl_encrypt_buf`, while the underlying key material
is configured once in `ssl_derive_keys` and is not explicitly dealt with
anymore afterwards. In particular, the key length is not needed
explicitly by the encryption/decryption functions but is nonetheless
stored in an explicit yet superfluous `keylen` field in `ssl_transform`.
This commit removes this field.
Previously, GCM required enabling either AES or Camellia. However, we
also support using GCM with ARIA and without other ciphers. Enable
configurations with only ARIA enabled to use GCM.
Make maintaining config files easier by removing any explicit
ciphersuite lists. These explicit lists are prone to being incomplete as
TLS defines more and more ciphersuites. Rather than try to play catch
up, let's refer to sets of ciphersuites with declarative language.
We've removed all software that depends on or uses the TLS, NET, and
X.509 modules. This means TLS, NET, and X.509 are unused and can be
removed. Remove TLS, NET, and X.509.
Remove TLS and NET options from config files and scripts.
Note that this fails check-names.sh because options that TLS and NET
files use are no longer present in config.h.
Types and functions that are not used in the attribute-based key
creation API are now implementation-specific extensions, kept around
until we finish transitioning to the new API.
Implement attribute querying.
Test attribute getters and setters. Use psa_get_key_attributes instead
of the deprecated functions psa_get_key_policy or
psa_get_key_information in most tests.
Implement the new, attribute-based psa_import_key and some basic

This commit starts a migration to a new interface for key creation.
Today, the application allocates a handle, then fills its metadata,
and finally injects key material. The new interface fills metadata
into a temporary structure, and a handle is allocated at the same time
it gets filled with both metadata and key material.
This commit was obtained by moving the declaration of the old-style
functions to crypto_extra.h and renaming them with the to_handle
suffix, adding declarations for the new-style functions in crypto.h
under their new name, and running

Merge the Mbed Crypto development branch a little after
mbedcrypto-1.0.0 into the PSA Crypto API 1.0 beta branch a little
after beta 2.
Summary of merge conflicts:
* Some features (psa_copy_key, public key format without

merge commit generally goes with the updated API except in the tests
where it keeps some aspects of the implementation.
Due to the divergence between the two branches on key derivation and
key agreement, test_suite_psa_crypto does not compile. This will be
resolved in subsequent commits.

branch. This brings in a version of Mbed Crypto that enables building
Mbed Crypto tests that depend on private headers, like
'psa_crypto_invasive.h'.
This also requires updating our config.h to include new configuration
options added to Mbed Crypto. MBEDTLS_PSA_ITS_FILE_C replaces
MBEDTLS_PSA_CRYPTO_STORAGE_FILE_C and MBEDTLS_PSA_CRYPTO_STORAGE_ITS_C.
MBEDTLS_PSA_INJECT_ENTROPY replaces MBEDTLS_PSA_HAS_ITS_IO.
MBEDTLS_PSA_HAS_ITS_IO is not really useful since it doesn't actually
enable anything except the entropy seed file support, which only
requires the ITS interface and not a native implemetation. Remove it.
Since the ITS API has stabilized and we don't plan to make use of more
than ITS, we don't need an abstraction layer between key storage and
key storage over ITS. Merge the ITS code into the generic storage
module.
Now that we have ITS over files, we no longer need a direct backend
for key storage over files. Remove psa_crypto_storage_file and its
tests.
Switch MBEDTLS_PSA_CRYPTO_STORAGE_ITS_C and MBEDTLS_PSA_ITS_FILE_C on
by default. This preserves functionality and test coverage in the
default configuration, but forgets any key previously stored using the
file backend.
For DH, ECC (Weierstrass curves) and DSA, specify that the re-drawing
method is the one defined by NIST as
"key-pair generation by testing candidates", and describe it
unambiguously.
Also specify DES explicitly.
Doxygen will fail to build if we have references to files that don't
exist. Since we are planning on removing X.509 soon, we even need to
remove explicit Doxygen references to X.509 things as those will no
longer resolve once the X.509 files are deleted.
fixup! asn1: Remove dependency on X.509
psa_generator_import_key() was only specified for "symmetric keys",
and there were some mistakes in the specification. Rewrite the
specification and extend it to other key types.
* For most private key types, specify that the function draws a byte
string repeatedly until the byte string is suitable.
* For DES, despite being a symmetric key type, re-drawing is
necessary.
* For Montgomery curves, despite being asymmetric, no re-drawing is

Add a new function mbedtls_asn1_write_named_bitstring() that removes
trailing 0s at the end of DER encoded bitstrings. The function is
implemented according to Hanno Becker's suggestions.
This commit also changes the functions x509write_crt_set_ns_cert_type
and crt_set_key_usage to call the new function as the use named
bitstrings instead of the regular bitstrings.
Additional work done as part of merge:
- Run ./tests/scripts/check-generated-files.sh and check in the
resulting changes to programs/ssl/query_config.c
The ecp_get_type function comes handy in higher level modules and tests
as well. It is not inline anymore, to enable alternative implementations
to implement it for themselves.
mbedtls_ecp_read_key() module returned without an error even when
importing keys corresponding to the requested group was not
implemented.
We change this and return an error when the requested group is not
supported and make the remaining import/export functions more robust.
`MBEDTLS_SSL__ECP_RESTARTABLE` is only defined if
`MBEDTLS_KEY_EXCHANGE_ECDHE_ECDSA_ENABLED` is set, which
requires `MBEDTLS_X509_PARSE_C` to be set (this is checked
in `check_config.`). The additional `MBEDTLS_X509_PARSE_C`
guard around the `ecrs_peer_cert` field is therefore not
necessary; moreover, it's misleading, because it hasn't
been used consistently throughout the code.
When removing the (session-local) copy of the peer's CRT chain, we must
keep a handshake-local copy of the peer's public key, as (naturally) every
key exchange will make use of that public key at some point to verify that
the peer actually owns the corresponding private key (e.g., verify signatures
from ServerKeyExchange or CertificateVerify, or encrypt a PMS in a RSA-based
exchange, or extract static (EC)DH parameters).
This commit adds a PK context field `peer_pubkey` to the handshake parameter
structure `mbedtls_handshake_params_init()` and adapts the init and free
functions accordingly. It does not yet make actual use of the new field.
This commit adds an ASN.1 buffer field `pk_raw` to `mbedtls_x509_crt`
which stores the bounds of the raw public key data within an X.509 CRT.
This will be useful in subsequent commits to extract the peer's public
key from its certificate chain.
`mbedtls_ssl_parse_certificate()` parses the peer's certificate chain
directly into the `peer_cert` field of the `mbedtls_ssl_session`
structure being established. To allow to optionally remove this field
from the session structure, this commit changes this to parse the peer's
chain into a local variable instead first, which can then either be freed
after CRT verification - in case the chain should not be stored - or
mapped to the `peer_cert` if it should be kept. For now, only the latter
is implemented.
A subsequent commit will need this function in the session ticket
and session cache implementations. As the latter are server-side,
this commit also removes the MBEDTLS_SSL_CLI_C guard.
For now, the function is declared in ssl_internal.h and hence not
part of the public API.
This commit introduces a static helper function
`mbedtls_ssl_ciphersuite_uses_srv_cert()`
which determines whether a ciphersuite may make use of server-side CRTs.
This function is in turn uses in `mbedtls_ssl_parse_certificate()` to
skip certificate parsing for ciphersuites which don't involve CRTs.
Note: Ciphersuites not using server-side CRTs don't allow client-side CRTs
either, so it is safe to guard `mbedtls_ssl_{parse/write}_certificate()`
this way.

crypto_extra.h has a dependency on platform_util.h for
MBEDTLS_DEPRECATED_NUMERIC_CONSTANT. Make the dependency explicit by
including platform_util.h. Although in most use cases the header should
already be included by something else, it doesn't hurt to include it
again and helps to clarify dependencies.
The function `mbedtls_mpi_write_binary()` writes big endian byte order,
but we need to be able to write little endian in some caseses. (For
example when handling keys corresponding to Montgomery curves.)
Used `echo xx | tac -rs ..` to transform the test data to little endian.
The private keys used in ECDH differ in the case of Weierstrass and
Montgomery curves. They have different constraints, the former is based
on big endian, the latter little endian byte order. The fundamental
approach is different too:
- Weierstrass keys have to be in the right interval, otherwise they are
rejected.
- Any byte array of the right size is a valid Montgomery key and it
needs to be masked before interpreting it as a number.
Historically it was sufficient to use mbedtls_mpi_read_binary() to read
private keys, but as a preparation to improve support for Montgomery
curves we add mbedtls_ecp_read_key() to enable uniform treatment of EC
keys.
For the masking the `mbedtls_mpi_set_bit()` function is used. This is
suboptimal but seems to provide the best trade-off at this time.
Alternatives considered:
- Making a copy of the input buffer (less efficient)
- removing the `const` constraint from the input buffer (breaks the api
and makes it less user friendly)
- applying the mask directly to the limbs (violates the api between the
modules and creates and unwanted dependency)
The function `mbedtls_mpi_read_binary()` expects big endian byte order,

Define MBEDTLS_ECDH_LEGACY_CONTEXT in config.h instead of hard-coding
this in ecdh.h so that its absence can be tested. Document it as
experimental so that we reserve the right to change it in the future.
When building for the PSA crypto service (defined(PSA_CRYPTO_SECURE)),
define psa_key_owner_id_t as int32_t, which is how a PSA platform
encodes partition identity. Note that this only takes effect when the
build option MBEDTLS_PSA_CRYPTO_KEY_FILE_ID_ENCODES_OWNER is active.
Support this configuration in the ITS backend.
Declare the owner as psa_key_owner_id_t, of which an implementation
must be provided separately.
Make this a configuration option
MBEDTLS_PSA_CRYPTO_KEY_FILE_ID_ENCODES_OWNER, to make the conditional
compilation flow easier to follow. Declare it in config.h to
pacify check_names.sh.
Support for a specific implementation of psa_key_owner_id_t in storage
backends will come in a subsequent commit.
Differentiate between _key identifiers_, which are always `uint32_t`,
and _key file identifiers_, which are platform-dependent. Normally,
the two are the same.
In `psa/crypto_platform.h`, define `psa_app_key_id_t` (which is always
32 bits, the standard key identifier type) and
`psa_key_file_id_t` (which will be different in some service builds).
A subsequent commit will introduce a platform where the two are different.
It would make sense for the function declarations in `psa/crypto.h` to
use `psa_key_file_id_t`. However this file is currently part of the
PSA Crypto API specification, so it must stick to the standard type
`psa_key_id_t`. Hence, as long as the specification and Mbed Crypto
are not separate, use the implementation-specific file
`psa/crypto_platform.h` to define `psa_key_id_t` as `psa_key_file_id_t`.
In the library, systematically use `psa_key_file_id_t`.

This commit improves hygiene and formatting of macro definitions
throughout the library. Specifically:
- It adds brackets around parameters to avoid unintended
interpretation of arguments, e.g. due to operator precedence.
- It adds uses of the `do { ... } while( 0 )` idiom for macros that
can be used as commands.
This is the first in a series of commits adding client-side
support for PSA-based ECDHE.
Previously, the state of an ECDHE key agreement was maintained
in the field mbedtls_ssl_handshake_params::ecdh_ctx, of type
::mbedtls_ecdh_context and manipulated through the ECDH API.
The ECDH API will be superseeded by the PSA Crypto API for key
agreement, which needs the following data:
(a) A raw buffer holding the public part of the key agreement
received from our peer.
(b) A key slot holding the private part of the key agreement.
(c) The algorithm to use.
The commit adds fields to ::mbedtls_ssl_handshake_params
representing these three inputs to PSA-based key agreement.
Specifically, it adds a field for the key slot holding the
ECDH private key, a field for the EC curve identifier, and
a buffer holding the peer's public key.
Note: Storing the peer's public key buffer is slightly
inefficient, as one could perform the ECDH computation
as soon as the peer sends its public key, either working
with in-place or using a stack-buffer to reformat the
public key before passing it to PSA. This optimization
is left for a later commit.
PSA spec now defines more generic PSA storage types instead of the ITS
specific ones. This is necessary in order to integrate with
the newer implementation of PSA ITS landing in Mbed OS soon.
Changes include the following:

Resolve conflicts by performing the following.
- Take the upstream Mbed TLS ChangeLog verbatim.
- Reject changes to Makefiles and CMake that are related to using Mbed
Crypto as a submodule. It doesn't make sense to use Mbed Crypto as a
submodule of itself.
- Reject README changes, as Mbed Crypto has its own, different README.
- Reject PSA-related changes to config.h. We don't want to disable the
availability of the PSA Crypto API by default in the Mbed Crypto
config.h.
- Don't inadvertently revert dead code removal in
mbedtls_cipher_write_tag() which was added in f2a7529403 ("Fix
double return statement in cipher.c")
- Where Mbed Crypto already had some MBEDTLS_USE_PSA_CRYPTO code (from
past companion PRs) take the latest version from Mbed TLS which
includes integration with MBEDTLS_CHECK_PARAMS.
- Update the version of the shared library files to match what's
currently present in Mbed TLS.
- Reject removal of testing with PSA from config full tests.
- Resolve conflicts in test tests/suites/helpers.function, where both
Mbed Crypto and Mbed TLS both added documentation for TEST_ASSERT.
Combine text from both documentation efforts.
- Reject adding a submodule of ourselves.
- Reject addition of submodule tests in all.sh.

- Avoid using USE_CRYPTO_SUBMODULE=1 in

Context:
The existing API `mbedtls_x509_parse_crt_der()` for parsing DER
encoded X.509 CRTs unconditionally makes creates a copy of the
input buffer in RAM. While this comes at the benefit of easy use,
-- specifically: allowing the user to free or re-use the input
buffer right after the call -- it creates a significant memory
overhead, as the CRT is duplicated in memory (at least temporarily).
This might not be tolerable a resource constrained device.
As a remedy, this commit adds a new X.509 API call
`mbedtls_x509_parse_crt_der_nocopy()`
which has the same signature as `mbedtls_x509_parse_crt_der()`
and almost the same semantics, with one difference: The input
buffer must persist and be unmodified for the lifetime of the
established instance of `mbedtls_x509_crt`, that is, until
`mbedtls_x509_crt_free()` is called.
Resolve incompatibilties in the RSA module where changes made for
parameter validation prevent Mbed Crypto from working. Mbed Crypto
depends on being able to pass zero-length buffers that are NULL to RSA
encryption functions.
This reverts commit 2f660d047d.
The macro PSA_HASH_FINAL_SIZE no longer exists and all instances of it
should be replaced by PSA_HASH_SIZE. Replace all remaining instances of
PSA_HASH_FINAL_SIZE with PSA_HASH_SIZE.
Merge a development version of Mbed TLS 2.16.0 that doesn't have
parameter validation into development.
The following conflicts were resolved:
- Update ChangeLog to include release notes merged from development so
far, with a version of "2.14.0+01b34fb316a5" and release date of
"xxxx-xx-xx" to show this is not a released version, but instead a
snapshot of the development branch equivalent to version of the 2.14.0
with additional commits from the mbedtls/development branch up through
01b34fb316 included. Entries added for unreleased versions of Mbed
Crypto remain at the top of the file for Mbed TLS 2.xx.x.
- Replace the Mbed Crypto version of
mbedtls_rsa_rsaes_pkcs1_v15_decrypt() with the version from Mbed TLS
which fixes timing variations and memory access variations that could
lead to a Bleichenbacher-style padding oracle attack. This will
prevent using psa_asymmetric_decrypt() with zero-length output buffers
until a follow up commit is made to restore this capability.
- In ssl_srv.c, include changes for both the new ECDH interface and
opaque PSK as already added to development previously.
Context: There are two public key writing functions in Mbed TLS. First,
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey(), which exports a public key in the form of a
SubjectPublicKey structure containing the raw keying material
(for example, EC point coordinates for an EC public key, without
reference to the underlying curve). Secondly, mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der(),
which exports a public key in the form of a SubjectPublicKeyInfo structure,
wrapping the SubjectPublicKey structure by additional information
identifying the type of public key (and for ECC, e.g., it'd also contain
the ECC group identifier). The implementation of mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der()
calls mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey() first and then adds the corresponding
algorithm identifier wrapper.
Both of these functions need to be provided for PSA-based opaque PK contexts,
based on PSA's public key export function.
Previously, PSA used the SubjectPublicKeyInfo structure as its export format,
so mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der() could be easily implemented, while
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey() would need to trim the output of the PSA export.
The previous implementation of mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey() is not quite right
because it calls PSA export doesn't do any trimming, hence exporting the large
SubjectPublicKeyInfo structure instead of the small SubjectPublicKey.
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der(), in turn, immediately returns after calling
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey(), hence also returning the SubjectPublicKeyInfo
structure, which is correct.
By now, the PSA public key export format has changed to the smaller
SubjectPublicKey structure. This means that, now, mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey()
can be implemented by just calling the PSA export, and that
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der() needs to add the algorithm information around
it, just as in the other types of PK contexts. While not correct for the
old format, the existing code for mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey() is therefore
correct for the new PSA public key format, and needs no change apart from
the missing pointer shift in the last commit.
The implementation of mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der() needs a special code
path for PSA-based opaque PK contexts, as the PK context only contains
the PSA key handle, and the PSA API needs to be used to extract the
underlying EC curve to be able to write the AlgorithmParameter structure
that's part of the SubjectPublicKeyInfo structure.
That's what this commit does, (hopefully) making both
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey() and mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der() export
the correctly formatted public key based on the new PSA public key format.
Context: There are two public key writing functions in Mbed TLS. First,
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey(), which exports a public key in the form of a
SubjectPublicKey structure containing the raw keying material
(for example, EC point coordinates for an EC public key, without
reference to the underlying curve). Secondly, mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der(),
which exports a public key in the form of a SubjectPublicKeyInfo structure,
wrapping the SubjectPublicKey structure by additional information
identifying the type of public key (and for ECC, e.g., it'd also contain
the ECC group identifier). The implementation of mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der()
calls mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey() first and then adds the corresponding
algorithm identifier wrapper.
Both of these functions need to be provided for PSA-based opaque PK contexts,
based on PSA's public key export function.
Previously, PSA used the SubjectPublicKeyInfo structure as its export format,
so mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der() could be easily implemented, while
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey() would need to trim the output of the PSA export.
The previous implementation of mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey() is not quite right
because it calls PSA export doesn't do any trimming, hence exporting the large
SubjectPublicKeyInfo structure instead of the small SubjectPublicKey.
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der(), in turn, immediately returns after calling
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey(), hence also returning the SubjectPublicKeyInfo
structure, which is correct.
By now, the PSA public key export format has changed to the smaller
SubjectPublicKey structure. This means that, now, mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey()
can be implemented by just calling the PSA export, and that
mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey_der() needs to add the algorithm information around
it, just as in the other types of PK contexts. While not correct for the
old format, the existing code for mbedtls_pk_write_pubkey() is therefore
correct for the new PSA public key format, and needs no change apart from
the missing pointer shift in the last commit.

Additional changes to temporarily enable running tests:
ssl_srv.c and test_suite_ecdh use mbedtls_ecp_group_load instead of
mbedtls_ecdh_setup
test_suite_ctr_drbg uses mbedtls_ctr_drbg_update instead of
mbedtls_ctr_drbg_update_ret
The file oid.c had conditional inclusion of functions based on a config.h
define that belongs to X.509, which is backwards. For now, just include those
functions unconditionally and rely on the linker to garbage-collect them if
not used.
In the longer term X.509-specific functions are likely to be removed from
libmbedcrypto, but at this step the goal is to preserve the API (and even ABI)
of libmbedcrypto for as long as possible while separating the source trees of
Mbed Crypto and Mbed TLS.
As agreed during the workshop, temporarily move definitions to oid.h even if
they might not semantically belong here, as a short-term measure allowing to
build libmbecrypto on its own (without X.509 files present in the source tree)
but still provide all the things Mbed TLS currently expects, and more
specifically preserve the API and ABI exposed by libmbedtls.
Remove front matter from our EC key format, to make it just the contents
of an ECPoint as defined by SEC1 section 2.3.3.
As a consequence of the simplification, remove the restriction on not
being able to use an ECDH key with ECDSA. There is no longer any OID
specified when importing a key, so we can't reject importing of an ECDH
key for the purpose of ECDSA based on the OID.
Remove pkcs-1 and rsaEncryption front matter from RSA public keys. Move
code that was shared between RSA and other key types (like EC keys) to
be used only with non-RSA keys.
New function psa_copy_key().
Conflicts:
* library/psa_crypto.c: trivial conflicts due to consecutive changes.
* tests/suites/test_suite_psa_crypto.data: the same code
was added on both sides, but with a conflict resolution on one side.
* tests/suites/test_suite_psa_crypto_metadata.function: the same code
was added on both sides, but with a conflict resolution on one side.
You can use PSA_ALG_ANY_HASH to build the algorithm value for a
hash-and-sign algorithm in a policy. Then the policy allows usage with
this hash-and-sign family with any hash.
Test that PSA_ALG_ANY_HASH-based policies allow a specific hash, but
not a different hash-and-sign family. Test that PSA_ALG_ANY_HASH is
not valid for operations, only in policies.
Test for a subclass of public-key algorithm: those that perform
full-domain hashing, i.e. algorithms that can be broken down as
sign(key, hash(message)).
Remove the type and bits arguments to psa_allocate_key() and
psa_create_key(). They can be useful if the implementation wants to
know exactly how much space to allocate for the slot, but many
implementations (including ours) don't care, and it's possible to work
around their lack by deferring size-dependent actions to the time when
the key material is created. They are a burden to applications and
make the API more complex, and the benefits aren't worth it.
Change the API and adapt the implementation, the units test and the
sample code accordingly.
Change the key derivation API to take inputs in multiple steps,
instead of a single one-site-fits-poorly function.
Conflicts:
* include/psa/crypto.h: merge independent changes in the documentation
of psa_key_agreement (public_key from the work on public key formats
vs general description and other parameters in the work on key derivation).
* tests/suites/test_suite_psa_crypto.data: update the key agreement
tests from the work on key derivation to the format from the work on
public key formats.
* tests/suites/test_suite_psa_crypto_metadata.function: reconcile the
addition of unrelated ALG_IS_xxx macros
Get rid of "key selection" algorithms (of which there was only one:
raw key selection).
Encode key agreement by combining a raw key agreement with a KDF,
rather than passing the KDF as an argument of a key agreement macro.
The normal way is to pass the shared secret to a key derivation.
Having an ad hoc function will allow us to simplify the possible
behaviors of key agreement and get rid of "key selection" algorithms
which are a hard-to-understand invention of this API.
It isn't a good fit. It's overly complex for what the API can do now,
which is Diffie-Hellman. Consider it again later for more complex use
cases such as authenticated key exchanges.
Use separate step types for a KDF secret and for the private key in a
key agreement.
Determine which key type is allowed from the step type, independently
of the KDF.
Forbid raw inputs for certain steps. They definitely should be
forbidden for asymmetric keys, which are structured. Also forbid them
for KDF secrets: the secrets are supposed to be keys, even if they're
unstructured.
Add the ability to specify Diffie-Hellman key exchange keys. Specify the
import/export format as well, even though importing and exporting isn't
implemented yet.
Remove front matter and DSS parameters from our DSA key formats, both
keypair and public key, to make it just a representation of the integer
private key, `x`, or the public key, `y`, respectively.
DSA and static DH need extra domain parameters. Instead of passing these
in with the keys themselves, add get and set functions to set and
retrieve this information about keys.
Add a new function mbedtls_asn1_write_named_bitstring() that removes
trailing 0s at the end of DER encoded bitstrings. The function is
implemented according to Hanno Becker's suggestions.
This commit also changes the functions x509write_crt_set_ns_cert_type
and crt_set_key_usage to call the new function as the use named
bitstrings instead of the regular bitstrings.

Copy the nice and clear documentation from psa_export_key() as to what
implementations are allowed to do regarding key export formats, as the
same applies to public keys.
hash_setup and mac_setup used to be called hash_start and mac_start,
but we've now converged on _setup as names. Finish making the
terminology in the documentation consistent.
We've added documentation for how context objects for multi-part
operations must be initialized consistently for key policy, hash,
cipher, and MAC. Update the generator documentation to be consistent
with how we've documented the other operations.
Add new initializers for cipher operation objects and use them in our
tests and library code. Prefer using the macro initializers due to their
straightforwardness.
The struct psa_cipher_operation_s is built with a
mbedtls_cipher_context_t. The shape of mbedtls_cipher_context_t and an
initializer that works with Clang 5.0 and its
-Wmissing-field-initializers varies based on the configuration of the
library. Instead of making multiple initializers based on a maze of
ifdefs for all combinations of MBEDTLS_CIPHER_MODE_WITH_PADDING,
MBEDTLS_CMAC_C, and MBEDTLS_USE_PSA_CRYPTO, add a dummy variable to
psa_cipher_operation_s's union that encloses mbedtls_cipher_context_t.
This allows us to initialize the dummy with a Clang-approved initializer
and have it properly initialize the entire object.
Add new initializers for MAC operation objects and use them in our tests
and library code. Prefer using the macro initializers due to their
straightforwardness.
Add new initializers for hash operation objects and use them in our
tests and library code. Prefer using the macro initializers due to their
straightforwardness.
Add new initializers for key policies and use them in our docs, example
programs, tests, and library code. Prefer using the macro initializers
due to their straightforwardness.
As there are some definitions that are defined regardless of
whether MBEDTLS_ECP_RESTARTABLE is defined or not, these definitions
need to be moved outside the MBEDTLS_ECP_ALT guards. This is a simple
move as MBEDTLS_ECP_ALT and MBEDTLS_ECP_RESTARTABLE are mutually
exclusive options.
Split crypto_driver.h into 4:
* crypto_driver_common.h for common definitions, not meant to be
included directly by driver code.
* crypto_accel_driver.h for drivers that work with transparent
key material.
* crypto_se_driver.h for drivers that work with opaque key
material.
* crypto_entropy_driver.h for drivers of entropy sources.
There is no code change in this commit, I only moved some code around.
Now that the type definitions that are useful for driver are in a
separate header file from the application interface function
declarations, include that header file in crypto_driver.h.
Some parts of the library, and crypto drivers, need to see key types,
algorithms, policies, etc. but not API functions. Move portable
integral types and macros to build and analyze values of these types
to a separate headers crypto_types.h and crypto_values.h.
No functional changes, code was only moved from crypto.h to the new headers.
Define psa_status_t to int32_t unconditionally. There's no reason to
refer to psa_error_t here: psa_error_t is int32_t if it's present. We
would only need a conditional definition if psa_defs.h and
psa_crypto.h used the same type name.
Keep the conditional definition of PSA_SUCCESS. Although the C
preprocessor allows a duplicate definition for a macro, it has to be
the exact same token sequence, not merely an equivalent way to build
the same value.
Document when a context must be initialized or not, when it must be
set up or not, and whether it needs a private key or a public key will
do.
The implementation is sometimes more liberal than the documentation,
accepting a non-set-up context as a context that can't perform the
requested information. This preserves backward compatibility.
For mbedtls_pk_parse_key and mbedtls_pk_parse_keyfile, the password is
optional. Clarify what this means: NULL is ok and means no password.
Validate parameters and test accordingly.
A 0-length buffer for the key is a legitimate edge case. Ensure that
it works, even with buf=NULL. Document the key and keylen parameters.
There are already test cases for parsing an empty buffer. A subsequent
commit will add tests for writing to an empty buffer.
The previous introduction of constant deprecation macros
in platform_util.h lead to failure of tests/scrips/check-names.sh
because the regular expressions in the latter choked on the brackets
in the part `__attribute__((deprecated))` of the definition of the
helper type `mbedtls_deprecated_{numeric|string}_constant_t`.
Postponing any further study and potential robustness improvements
in check-names.sh to another time, this commit circumvents this
problem by temporarily abbreviating `__attribute__((deprecated))`
as `MBEDTLS_DEPRECATED`, which doesn't lead to problems with
check-names.sh.
This commit introduces macros
* MBEDTLS_DEPRECATED_STRING_CONSTANT
* MBEDTLS_DEPRECATED_NUMERIC_CONSTANT
to platform_util.h which can be used to deprecate public macro constants.
Their definition is essentially taken from dhm.h where the
MBEDTLS_DEPRECATED_STRING_CONSTANT was used to deprecate
insecure hardcoded DHM primes.
Add inclusion to configration file in header files,
instead of relying on other header files to include
the configuration file. This issue resolves#1371
- Be specific about the constraints: be a readable/writable buffer of length
X, be an initialized context, be a context initialized and bound to a key...
- Always use full sentences with all the required pronouns.
Some of the documentation is obsolete in its reference to key slots
when it should discuss key handles. This may require a further pass,
possibly with some reorganization of error codes.
Update the documentation of functions that modify key slots (key
material creation and psa_set_key_policy()) to discuss how they affect
storage.
This commit marks the beginning of the removal of support for direct
access to key slots. From this commit on, programs that use
psa_key_slot_t will no longer compile.
Subsequent commits will remove the now-unused legacy support in
psa_crypto.c.
Replace `psa_key_slot_t key` by `psa_key_handle_t` in function
declarations.
This is a transition period during which handles are key slot numbers
and the whole library can still be used by accessing a key slot number
without allocating a handle.
It's better if the macro receives the condition as an expression rather than a
string - that way it can choose to use it as is or stringify it. Also, the
documentation states that the parameter is an expression, not a string.
The test framework for validation of parameters depends on the macro
MBEDTLS_PARAM_FAILED() being set to its default value when building the
library. So far the test framework attempted to define this macro but this was
the wrong place - this definition wouldn't be picked by the library.
Instead, a different approach is taken: skip those tests when the macro is
defined in config.h, as in that case we have no way to know if it will indeed
end up calling mbedtls_param_failed() as we need it to.
This commit was tested by manually ensuring that aes_invalid_params:
- passes (and is not skipped) in the default configuration
- is skipped when MBEDTLS_PARAM_FAILED() is defined in config.h
The previous prototype gave warnings are the strings produced by #cond and
__FILE__ are const, so we shouldn't implicitly cast them to non-const.
While at it modifying most example programs:
- include the header that has the function declaration, so that the definition
can be checked to match by the compiler
- fix whitespace
- make it work even if PLATFORM_C is not defined:
- CHECK_PARAMS is not documented as depending on PLATFORM_C and there is
no reason why it should
- so, remove the corresponding #if defined in each program...
- and add missing #defines for mbedtls_exit when needed
The result has been tested (make all test with -Werror) with the following
configurations:
- full with CHECK_PARAMS with PLATFORM_C
- full with CHECK_PARAMS without PLATFORM_C
- full without CHECK_PARAMS without PLATFORM_C
- full without CHECK_PARAMS with PLATFORM_C
Additionally, it has been manually tested that adding
mbedtls_aes_init( NULL );
near the normal call to mbedtls_aes_init() in programs/aes/aescrypt2.c has the
expected effect when running the program.
It was inconsistent between files: sometimes 3 arguments, sometimes one.
Align to 1 argument for the macro and 3 for the function, because:
- we don't need 3 arguments for the macro, it can add __FILE__ and __LINE__
in its expansion, while the function needs them as parameters to be correct;
- people who re-defined the macro should have flexibility, and 3 arguments
can give the impression they they don't have as much as they actually do;
- the design document has the macro with 1 argument, so let's stick to that.
The function called through the macro MBEDTLS_PARAM_FAILED() must be supplied by
users and makes no sense as a library function, apart from debug and test.
The SSL module accesses ECDH context members directly to print debug
information. This can't work with the new context, where we can't make
assumptions about the implementation of the context. This commit adds
new debug functions to complete the encapsulation of the ECDH context
and work around the problem.
We want to support alternative software implementations and we extend
the ECDH context to enable this. The actual functional change that makes
use of the new context is out of scope for this commit.
Changing the context breaks the API and therefore it has to be
excluded from the default configuration by a compile time flag.
We add the compile time flag to the module header instead of
`config.h`, because this is not a standalone feature, it only
enables adding new implementations in the future.
The new context features a union of the individual implementations
and a selector that chooses the implementation in use. An alternative
is to use an opaque context and function pointers, like for example the
PK module does it, but it is more dangerous, error prone and tedious to
implement.
We leave the group ID and the point format at the top level of the
structure, because they are very simple and adding an abstraction
layer around them away does not come with any obvious benefit.
Other alternatives considered:
- Using the module level replacement mechanism in the ECP module. This
would have made the use of the replacement feature more difficult and
the benefit limited.
- Replacing our Montgomery implementations with a new one directly. This
would have prevented using Montgomery curves across implementations.
(For example use implementation A for Curve448 and implementation B for
Curve22519.) Also it would have been inflexible and limited to
Montgomery curves.
- Encoding the implementation selector and the alternative context in
`mbedtls_ecp_point` somehow and rewriting `mbedtls_ecp_mul()` to
dispatch between implementations. This would have been a dangerous and
ugly hack, and very likely to break legacy applications.
- Same as above just with hardcoding the selector and using a compile
time option to make the selection. Rejected for the same reasons as
above.
- Using the PK module to provide to provide an entry point for
alternative implementations. Like most of the above options this
wouldn't have come with a new compile time option, but conceptually
would have been very out of place and would have meant much more work to
complete the abstraction around the context.
In retrospect:
- We could have used the group ID as the selector, but this would have
made the code less flexible and only marginally simpler. On the other
hand it would have allowed to get rid of the compile time option if a
tight integration of the alternative is possible. (It does not seem
possible at this point.)
- We could have used the same approach we do in this commit to the
`mbedtls_ecp_point` structure. Completing the abstraction around this
structure would have been a much bigger and much riskier code change
with increase in memory footprint, potential decrease in performance
and no immediate benefit.
In the future we want to support alternative ECDH implementations. We
can't make assumptions about the structure of the context they might
use, and therefore shouldn't access the members of
`mbedtls_ecdh_context`.
Currently the lifecycle of the context can't be done without direct
manipulation. This commit adds `mbedtls_ecdh_setup()` to complete
covering the context lifecycle with functions.
`mbedtls_ecp_tls_read_group()` both parses the group ID and loads the
group into the structure provided. We want to support alternative
implementations of ECDH in the future and for that we need to parse the
group ID without populating an `mbedtls_ecp_group` structure (because
alternative implementations might not use that).
This commit moves the part that parses the group ID to a new function.
There is no need to test the new function directly, because the tests
for `mbedtls_ecp_tls_read_group()` are already implicitly testing it.
There is no intended change in behaviour in this commit.

This will be useful in eliminating temporary stack buffers for transcoding the
signature: in order to do that in place we need to be able to make assumptions
about the size of the output buffer, which this macro will provide. (See next
commit.)
It's better for names in the API to describe the "what" (opaque keys) rather
than the "how" (using PSA), at least since we don't intend to have multiple
function doing the same "what" in different ways in the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately the can_do wrapper does not receive the key context as an
argument, so it cannot check psa_get_key_information(). Later we might want to
change our internal structures to fix this, but for now we'll just restrict
opaque PSA keys to be ECDSA keypairs, as this is the only thing we need for
now. It also simplifies testing a bit (no need to test each key type).
While at it, clarify who's responsible for destroying the underlying key. That
can't be us because some keys cannot be destroyed and we wouldn't know. So
let's leave that up to the caller.
The sanity checking script tests/scripts/check-names.sh uses a
simple state machine paired with a sequence of `sed` commands to
extract enumeration constants from the code. This code, however,
doesn't work properly when using multiline comments in enumerations
such as recently done in the constants MBEDTLS_CIPHER_PSA_KEY_XXX.
This commit doesn't attempt to make check-names.sh more robust
but instead uses /* ... */ comment indicators in each comment line,
while silences check-names.sh.
Increasing the robustness of check-names.sh is instead tracked
in #2210.

to mbedtls_cipher_setup_psa(). For Non-AEAD ciphers, the value
must be 0.
This approach is preferred over passing psa_algorithm_t directly
in order to keep the changes in existing code using the cipher layer
small.
This commit implements the internal key slot management performed
by PSA-based cipher contexts. Specifically, `mbedtls_cipher_setkey()`
wraps the provided raw key material into a key slot, and
`mbedtls_cipher_free()` destroys that key slot.
This field determines whether a cipher context should
use an external implementation of the PSA Crypto API for
cryptographic operations, or Mbed TLS' own crypto library.
The commit also adds dummy implementations for the cipher API.
This commit adds a field `psk_opaque` to the handshake parameter
struct `mbedtls_ssl_handshake_params` which indicates if the user
has configured the use of an opaque PSK.
This commit adds two public API functions
mbedtls_ssl_conf_psk_opaque()
mbedtls_ssl_set_hs_psk_opaque()
which allow to configure the use of opaque, PSA-maintained PSKs
at configuration time or run time.
In case of AEAD ciphers, the cipher mode (and not even the entire content
of mbedtls_cipher_info_t) doesn't uniquely determine a psa_algorithm_t
because it doesn't specify the AEAD tag length, which however is included
in psa_algorithm_t identifiers.
This commit adds a tag length value to mbedtls_psa_translate_cipher_mode()
to account for that ambiguity.
This commit adds the header file mbedtls/psa_util.h which contains
static utility functions `mbedtls_psa_xxx()` used in the integration
of PSA Crypto into Mbed TLS.

about the size of the output buffer, which this macro will provide. (See next
commit.)
It's better for names in the API to describe the "what" (opaque keys) rather
than the "how" (using PSA), at least since we don't intend to have multiple
function doing the same "what" in different ways in the foreseeable future.
Unfortunately the can_do wrapper does not receive the key context as an
argument, so it cannot check psa_get_key_information(). Later we might want to
change our internal structures to fix this, but for now we'll just restrict
opaque PSA keys to be ECDSA keypairs, as this is the only thing we need for
now. It also simplifies testing a bit (no need to test each key type).
While at it, clarify who's responsible for destroying the underlying key. That
can't be us because some keys cannot be destroyed and we wouldn't know. So
let's leave that up to the caller.
This commit adds a field `psk_opaque` to the handshake parameter
struct `mbedtls_ssl_handshake_params` which indicates if the user
has configured the use of an opaque PSK.
This commit adds two public API functions
mbedtls_ssl_conf_psk_opaque()
mbedtls_ssl_set_hs_psk_opaque()
which allow to configure the use of opaque, PSA-maintained PSKs
at configuration time or run time.
In case of AEAD ciphers, the cipher mode (and not even the entire content
of mbedtls_cipher_info_t) doesn't uniquely determine a psa_algorithm_t
because it doesn't specify the AEAD tag length, which however is included
in psa_algorithm_t identifiers.
This commit adds a tag length value to mbedtls_psa_translate_cipher_mode()
to account for that ambiguity.
This commit adds the header file mbedtls/psa_util.h which contains
static utility functions `mbedtls_psa_xxx()` used in the integration
of PSA Crypto into Mbed TLS.
